1. Welcome and BOK News

Dear Members and subscribers,

Welcome to the May 2022 edition of the BOK Events newsletter.

After an incredibly busy April organising the JK Relays, Track to Terrain, the BOK Urban series and the upcoming regional event at Wavering Down next week, this month it is all about the orienteering with races every single week!

Entries close for the BOK Regional Wavering Down & Yvette Baker heat event TODAY, Monday 2nd May via Fabian4. Make sure you enter here.

Track to Terrain, our adult beginners orienteering training course is being held on Tuesday evenings in Ashton Court and practically all our coaches are helping train our newcomers who we look forward to welcoming to our orienteering races very soon.

We had a record number of entries for the first of the BOK Urban series event at the University of Bristol and we are all very excited about the rest of the series - see below for all the details.  A very big thank you to the UBOC team of Robert Elston, Sophie Jones and Dan Weaver for organising, planning and controlling the brilliant first race of the BOK urban series.

I have been drafted in to organise the next urban at Emersons Green so I am a  little nervous, but I am confident that given all the training and guidance from Dudley Budden and series coordinator David Faulkner, it will be a successful race. You will be pleased to know that Dudley stepped in to plan all the courses and has guided me through every single step of the way, basically handling everything. Thank you Dudley.  Although the normal entries close the week before, there may still be a few entries available until tonight, Monday 2nd May, on the a first come first served basis at the extra cost of £2 additional per entry. Enter via Pre-Entries here.

We also have the British Sprint Weekend in Leeds coming up on 11-12th June which you should have got an email from Captain Scott about yesterday. All the details can be found here and entries can be made via Fabian 4. BOK will pay 50% of the entry fee. Running in a relay race is a really fun thing to do and we will have teams available for you to join whatever your ability and competitiveness.

We also have lots of fantastic news to share with you this month:

Wedding News
Helen Hanstock, daughter of David and Fiona, and sister to Stuart got married to James Turton in 9th April in Östersund, Jämptland, Sweden on the 9th April.

Helen and James, 9th April in Östersund, Jämptland, Sweden.

They were joined by family and friends from around the World including former BOK member, Nicky Webster (neé Johnson), who was one of Helens Bridesmaids, and Sarah Jane and Nick Barrable (of Compass Sport magazine) and their daughter Lara.

We all wish them both a very Happy Marriage and future life together. Congratulations Helen and James.

Volunteer of the Year Award
Congratulations to BOK member, Pete Maliphant who British Orienteering has awarded Volunteer of the year Award. Pete has been the manager of the South-West Junior Orienteering Squad (SWJOS) for many years now. His enthusiasm and dedication to supporting subsequent generations of young orienteers has never wavered, and he creates a serious yet fun environment for learning and personal development. During lockdown Pete set up a weekly Zoom slot for the squad from skills teaching to games, from guest speakers to personal testimonies, he has sustained a huge array of content, much of which he has drawn out of the youngsters themselves. For some of the youngsters confined to their homes for so many months, the SWJOS online sessions have been of huge psychological value in keeping their spirits up and giving them some sort of social outlet. In many ways, this has been more valuable than the actual orienteering content.

JK2022
Well done to everyone who both organised, planned, helped and ran in the JK. I have included a section this month dedicated to the results, which as a club we are very proud of - some brilliant results and very crucial to those selected for international events. Particular thanks again to Charles Daniels, Tommi Grover and Dan Weaver for all their work organising and planning the  excellent JK Day 4 National Relays.

Tuesday Training runs now consist of our summer scenic run format of meeting at a pub, doing an hour run and then a drink/something to eat together afterwards. This week the run started at The Star Inn at Congresbury and the group ran in Kings Wood and Goblin Combe. According to Ifor Powell it was 'the most scenic run of the year. Really great bluebell woods with added early purple orchids and goats.' Everyone is welcome, running or not. (Contact me or Tommi if you are going to join us and we will book an appropriate sized table on the day).

Please continue to share details of our urban orienteering with your friends and family. As most of us are able to navigate ourselves quite easily around the streets of towns and parks, many people find the urban series a good place to start orienteering.

May the force of Spring be with you,

Amy Curtis

BOK Urban Series 2022
by Scott Bailey, Captain

Record numbers of entries make for a exciting start to the Urban Orienteering Series

With over 150 entries, the first event of the BOK Urban Orienteering Series 2022 proved to be an exciting race at a complex (and hilly) Bristol University Halls campus.  Last years season opener at the end of April was not blessed with the best of weather (those that were there might remember the constant rain and dark skies). However, despite the evening being pretty cold this year the weather was good to us and we even had a beautiful sunset to view over the Bristol Channel whilst standing at the finish and watching late starters come in.

The racing was pretty fast and complicated in the Uni Halls campus, with the longer courses also getting to run out into the surrounding Stoke Lodge roads.  The courses were planned with a complex opening few controls, making for a quick navigational challenge to get into the map, looking at routegadget afterwards it's clear that the early leaders were those that didn’t make many mistakes in navigation here (rather than always the fastest runners).  The longer legs into the housing areas were where time could be made up if you were a faster runner.  Then it was back into the Uni Halls for a complex finish, and also a few ‘hill reps’ based upon the comments on social media after the event!

Adam Potter won the Long course in a time of 32:23, with only another 3 runners under the 40 minute mark (Owain Jones, Steven Denby, and Scott Bailey).  The top Women runner on the Long was Emily Elms in 47:57, with Sara Currie, Alys Smith and Amy-Lee Jones all in the top 4.

Rachel Leathwood won the Medium course in a time of 30:54, followed by Alex Massie, Graham Hartley and Alex Smith.  Top four Women were Rachel (clearly faster than the men as well as the women!), Louise Tonge, Jackie Hallett, and Lindsey Kennedy.

Carol Iddles won the Short course in at time of 20:45, followed by Sophie Leathwood, Emily Leathwood and Issy Cload.  Making a clean sweep for women on the Short course!, and also a very successful evening for the Leathwood household. Full results and splits are available online.

There was plenty of praise afterwards for the expert organisation and planning of the event by the UBOC team (particular thanks to Robert Elston, Dan Weaver, and Sophie Jones).  It has set a very high bar for the rest of the races in the series.

With next weeks event at Emersons Green, we are looking forward to getting an early view of league positions. Will last years winners still be strong? Stay tuned to find out!
