Cobra's
Weekly Round Up

Round 4

this week.

We travel to Nar Nar Goon for another traditional clash between our two clubs. We have a strong connection through families who have been involved in both clubs over the years which has resulted in a fierce rivalry. It doesn’t seem to matter where either club is on the ladder the competition is always close.

Our life members and sponsors day was well attended with Councillor Kay Cameron and MP Jason Wood included amongst our special guests.

last week.

seniors.

Our senior team battled a strong, mature Tooradin team in terrific conditions. The Cora Lynn ground is back to its best.
Our team had a tentative start and took a while to settle into their pattern by playing from behind for the majority of the game. Their lack of confidence is only to be expected while they are getting used to the new coaching style which takes at least six weeks before they gel as a team.

Tom Stiglich was clearly our best player on the ground for his hunt for the contest and his ability to win the 50/50 balls. Chris Johnson continued on in the mid field and he has a had a great start to the year. Luke Hartley showed great signs around the contest and Jeremy Monckton’s defensive pressure was a standout, having the rare skill of being able to have a burst of acceleration at the right time to run down players from behind.

Other players who did their bit included Cory Machaya who continues to bob up in spectacular fashion with his marking and Dillan Bass who was solid again in defence. As more and more players gain their confidence we are looking for further improvements over the next few weeks.

development team.

In near perfect conditions we faced a very impressive Tooradin outfit that had only conceded 8 points from their previous 3 games.
In the first 10 minutes we showed we can compete well however our lack of run and their class allowed them to score easily late in the quarter. The second quarter again showed glimpses of grit and determination from our boys but again our work rate and their commitment to their game plan took its toll.

With a positive mindset and great effort we challenged Tooradin at times in the third quarter Oskar Knight showed his capability at both ends of the ground and Josh McKenzie’s efforts were outstanding. Other players who contributed positively included Matthew Ferguson, Sean Wilson, Corey Brook and Nick Buckland.

In the end Tooradin ran out convincing winners. Everyone in our team showed signs they can contribute, we need our players to get to training consistently to gain some momentum in the middle part of the season. Thanks to Peter Jones who umpired, the recreation reserve committee and all those involved in getting the ground in such great nick.

thirds.

With both teams being pretty familiar to each other, it shaped up to be a great contest, which is exactly what happened.
The first quarter was a real arm wrestle with both teams working hard to try crack through the other, we were able to get the game going our way a little bit and probably didn’t make the most of our chances, and after a late mistake and also a lapse in concentration Tooradin were able to grab a very late goal just as the ¼ time siren went to make it all square at the break.
When the 2nd quarter got going, Tooradin really took the advantage and got the game going their way and really controlled the whole quarter, breaking away from us, kicking numerous goals and keeping us to only a single point for the quarter.

At the main break, the boys had the acid put on them and they were able to fight back and start to claw their way back into the game ever so slightly and really make it a much more competitive display through the quarter.
At ¾ time though it was still a strong lead for Tooradin and our boys really needed to dig deep and compete or they were going to just pull away. After an early goal by Tooradin it wasn’t looking good, however the boys started to get their game going and were able to start hitting the score board a bit more. We were able to reduce the lead to just over 2 goals, a snap on goal that just missed would have really made it interesting, however on the day Tooradin were just a bit to strong and were able to take away the win.

Better players were Ben Baird who worked tirelessly in the backline, Jett Edwards who played everywhere, Toby Goswell through the midfield Olly Sail tried hard all day in the ruck, with Ryley Potter giving us a bit of a spark in the last quarter.
