Happy August Data Strategy Pro,

It's an important time for Data Strategy Professionals - this month, we're celebrating the birthday of the CDMP Study Group on August 14th.

This month, CDMP Study Group turns two!!

To recognize the occasion, we're releasing a limited edition light blue Data Strategist t-shirt.  This colorway is available for this month only, so be sure to snag one.

In this month's newsletter, we'll discuss some news about global data interoperability.  We also highlight a fun opportunity for community members working on Data Science in R, cover what we learned in July, and talk about what's coming up this month

Data adequacy is a status granted by the European Commission to countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA) that agree to meet a comparably high standard of personal data protection.  When a country has been awarded this status, information can pass freely between it and the EEA without further safeguards.  This is a crucial concept for Data InteroperabilityDMBOK chapter 8 and a recent topic of study for CDMP Study Group.

When the UK left the European Union on January 2020, it initially lost access to data interchange with EU countries.  In June 2021, the EU adopted a data adequacy decision which allowed data exchange to resume.  This means that organizations in the UK can receive data from EEA countries without putting additional arrangements in place.

Since Brexit, the UK has pursued a broader data exchange effort that it hopes will boost investment, law enforcement, scientific research, services delivery, and international trade.  The Information Commissioner announced the country's aim to seek data adequacy agreements with the United States, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, Dubai's International Finance Center, Columbia, India, Brazil, Kenya, and Indonesia.

The importance of Data Integration is underscored by the fact that the services trade is increasingly facilitated by cross-border data flows.  The United Nations suggests that a potential $13.2B lift in global trading volume could be realized by putting Data Interoperability and Integration standards into place between trading partners.

What We Learned in July

In the CDMP Study Group, we covered Data Integration & Interoperability, which is ch. 8 of the DMBOK and 6% of the content on the CDMP exam.

  • Integration is the process of sending and receiving data. Interoperability refers to data sharing and also involves metadata.
  • Main types of interoperability:
    1. Syntactic - two or more systems can communicate and share data, thus allowing different types of software to work together
    2. Structural - defines the data exchange format, which specifies the standards used to format messages sent from one system to another
    3. Semantic - two or more systems connect and share data that each system understands in a meaningful way
  • ETL (Extract Transform Load) and ELT (Extract Load Transform) are methods of data input which typically run overnight, while CDC (Change Data Capture) is event driven and delivers real time incremental replication.
In Breaking into Data Science, we learned about Data Strategy (it's our crossover episode)
  • The volume of data has increased 3,000% in the past decade.  For an organization to be able to capitalize on its comparative advantage, effective Data Strategy is more important than ever.
  • The Aiken Pyramid is a framework that outlines how the core areas Data Strategy build upon each other.
  • A strong data infrastructure allows an organization to validate its hypotheses about customer values.  Data provides a common language across business functions, allowing teams to move collectively towards empirically derived truth.
In case you missed it, be sure to check out our article on Bayes Theorem (recently recognized as a Top 8 post for June).

Book Recommendations

Upcoming in August

In the CDMP Study Group, we'll spend the month focused on ch. 9 of the DMBOK, Document and Content Management.  In Breaking into Data Science, we're covering the critically important domain of Data Ethics.  Check out Data Strategy Professionals on LinkedIn for the latest data-related news and job offerings.

Final Thoughts

Have you considered investing in a coach to advance your career?

According to the book Make it Stick, bringing on a coach is an excellent way to slingshot your personal learning and development.

A coach can help you develop a framework for making better decisions about your career.

A coach can also help you avoid illusion of knowing. Did you know that people at lower levels of competence systematically overestimate their knowledge and skills?

It can be very difficult to gage the gaps in your performance on your own.

With a coach, you can work on deliberate practice. This means really shoring up your weaknesses, rather than doubling down on them.

At Data Strategy Professionals, we offer Career Coaching with Data Strategy experts.  Plus, Members receive 20% off coaching services.

We look forward to working with you to reach your goals!

While personal motivation is key to attaining your goals, the impact of a supportive group cannot be overstated.

CDMP Study Group offers preparation for the open-book Certified Data Management Professional exam on best practices in Data Strategy.  This valuable leadership credential is associated with top positions in management, data architecture, and data science.

Breaking into Data Science is a Facebook group for sharing resources on data science and machine learning.  Each month, we cover a different topic related to breaking into Data Science.

Data Strategy is a crucial discipline that spans end-to-end management of the data lifecycle.  Given that what we choose to measure and evaluate is a reflection of our values, Data Strategy Professionals offers a thoughtful forum for conversation about these critical topics.

We also offer training for Data Strategists and Data Scientists.  Your ambitions are within your reach!

Cheers,
Nicole
