Welcome to this week's issue of The Birthday Workbook!

Today, we read an article by Hui Min on the compassionate practice of the Law.

Before you read the article, watch the following video and answer the questions that follow:
  • What was most memorable about the video to you?
  • In pairs, share a moment when you were the recipient of a random act of kindness and compassion.
  • In your opinion, how was this video effective in conveying that "a simple act of caring creates an endless ripple that comes back to you"?

Compassion in action

Consider the following questions:
  1. Hui Min shared that the Legal Aid Bureau "provides legal services at no or low cost to the less privileged". In your opinion, state two potential challenges that the Legal Aid Bureau might face in the course of its work.
  2. Hui Min reckoned that the "road that we usually like to take is the safe road". Do you agree with this perspective? Explain your answer.
  3. What were the costs involved for Hui Min and the Bureau for having compassion in their line of work?
  4. "She was not our applicant -- but she was a human being in trouble." In your opinion, why did Hui Min make this distinction? What effect did this distinction generate?
  5. In your opinion, why would the "compassionate practice of the Law" be an oxymoron?
  6. Further reflection: When have you "taken a step more than what the Standard Operating Procedure mapped out"? In pairs, share both the benefits and costs involved in taking that step.
