High Value employees always have options. Virtually never do they have to look for a job. High value employees are always employed because their employers see their value. If they move jobs it is almost always due to their employer making a mistake. The mistake leads to the employee leaving or in most cases they make a decision to listen to other opportunities. Then it is just a matter of time before they leave.

The hot button for high value employees is opportunity

Let’s talk for a minute about what is not in the above statement. Money is not their main focus. This is due to the fact that their value will always equate to money. A whiz bang culture is also not a priority for them. Most companies who have opportunities will also have an agreeable culture. High value employees are not impressed by all of the trendy benefits which come and go.

Their focus is on future growth opportunities both professional and personal. They want to work for a person or organization which exhibits a vision, a plan and the maturity to make it happen.

High value employees totally believe in this thought process. They will never stop shooting for the moon and this is where their value comes from. They want to hear about a big bodacious vision where they can contribute and grow. You will find few if any of this type of employee working in government or quasi government agencies. They also do not work for organizations which are stagnant or declining. Sometimes they make a mistake and end up in one of the above. They will not stay long.

Years ago I had to find an E-Commerce Director. My greatest assets were the opportunity which was huge and the fact that the organization was moving in the right direction. The location was my greatest challenge. I had to find someone who recognized the opportunity while accepting the location. It was amazing how quickly I found a high value employee who was focused on the opportunity. His willingness to do that proved who he was at his core.
