Upcoming Meeting

12 May 2022
Subcommittees will not be meeting this month!
     General Meeting: 11:00am- 1:30pm (EDT)

Please note: As this is the meeting that immediately precedes the IMRF, we will not be meeting in subcommittees. The general monthly meeting will begin at 11:00am, and the first hour of our meeting will be used to discuss preparations for the IMRF and receive updates from our Nominations Committee on the announcement of the slate for the Executive Committee and election procedures for June. At noon, we will welcome a panel organized by the Children in Migration subcommittee.

Cities on the Frontiers of Migration: Welcoming and Integrating Our New Neighbors

Cities around the world are on the front line of managing the impact of migration as well as the promotion of inclusive, fair, and sustainable societies. Cities are ground zero for major global challenges, and mayors are on the front lines of finding workable solutions. COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine are the latest exacerbators of human rights violations and poverty; their impact is disproportionately harder on the most at-risk segments of the society in particular women and children. In the Mayoral Declaration of Marrakech, more than 60 mayors pledged to support, in a coordinated and effective way, the implementation of the two global compacts on migrants and refugees, including Early Childhood Development.

This month's panel will discuss the critical role of the cities facing the pandemic and the Ukraine war, in protecting and promoting human rights of migrants and refugees, starting with the youngest ones. International promising practices show us that many cities already represent a "force of change" in this direction.

Civil Society Open Letter to Co-Facilitators on Rev 3

The Civil Society Action Committee, in collaboration with co-drafters from the NGO Committee on Migration, sent an open letter to all UN Member States and the Co-Facilitators of the Progress Declaration of the IMRF.

The letter expresses deep disappointment in relation to Rev 3 of the Progress Declaration. It calls for a reaffirmation of the GCM, acknowledging that detention is never in the best interest of the child, avoiding criminalization of migrants, and additional proposals for Rev 4.

Click here to read the full letter. We encourage you to share this document with your networks and contacts in Permanent Missions to the UN.

Civil Society Preparatory Day

The Civil Society Action Committee will culminate its year-long preparatory process to the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) with a self-organized, open Civil Society Preparatory Day that will take place on Sunday, 15 May 2022, from 9:00am-5:00pm (EDT).

This preparatory meeting, open to all of civil society and held in a fully hybrid format (in-person and online),  aims to share and consolidate the key civil society joint inputs and points of engagement for the May 16 Multi-Stakeholder Hearing and the rest of the IMRF (17-20 May).

All are welcome to join online, or in person in New York. Click here to register. The deadline to register for in-person participation is Friday, 6 May 2022.

PMC People's Forum

The People’s Migration Challenge (PMC) is convening to mobilize a parallel event to the IMRF to drive practical and much needed action to assess the GCM implementation. Following the reflection series and regional consultations under the auspices of PMC, the People’s Forum aims to provide space for civil society to engage in a grounded and meaningful discussion on migration policy.

Mark your calendars and join the PMC through a hybrid format in New York and online on 16-20 May 2022! Click here to view the program agenda, and click here to register. The registration deadline is 13 May.

NGO Committee on Migration: Priorities and Practices for Solutions

The NGO Committee on Migration produced a four-page advocacy document, entitled Priorities and Practices for Solutions in the SDGs, the Global Compact for Migration, and the International Migration Review Forum in 2022 and beyond.

The document reflects the advocacy priorities of the NGO Committee on Migration and will guide our upcoming visits with representatives of Permanent Missions to the UN, in the lead up to the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF).

It calls attention to the following thematic areas

  1. Lessons of COVID-time: make permanent and replicate positive practices and partnerships
  2. Climate change
  3. Migrants in vulnerable situations, including mixed migration
  4. Children in migration
  5. Xenophobia, racism and fostering inclusion

This document provides concrete examples of solutions that have been developed by the worldwide membership of the NGO Committee on Migration: practitioners and advocates, networks and organizations with members on the front-line at grass-roots, national, regional, and international levels; partners with States, local authorities, and business. Many of these whom are migrants, refugees, diaspora, or their family members.

It Takes a Community: Contribute Your Stories

The NGO Committee on Migration's Subcommittee on Xenophobia, Racism and Social Inclusion is looking for positive migrant stories!

We aim to inspire dialogue and transformation through sharing positive narratives about migrants and their local communities. Together with with iTAC (It Takes a Community), a social media campaign of the Civil Society Mechanism of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), we seek to highlight the transformative power of migrant contributions to individual growth and community development as migrants overcome xenophobia and racism and gain recognition and acceptance.

Reach out to your networks, gather these stories (you may be surprised yourselves by what they tell you!), and send them to ngomigrationstories@gmail.com
