"Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy, it is democracy."
Walter Cronkite, American broadcast journalist

And that's the way it is.

Here's what's In The Moment this week.

This Cooper's no Mini to PRT. When Tulsa listener Denna Starwalt was thinking about how to support her public radio station, she only had to look as far as her garage. Now Denna's Mini Cooper has a new life as her favorite Public Radio Tulsa programs...and your car can too!  HERE'S Denna's story...

You need Nessun Dorma in your life. There's beautiful music, and then there's Puccini's Turandot, and his sublime aria Nessun Dorma...perhaps the most famous aria in all opera. Hear Yonghoon Lee interpret this beloved aria with the Metropolitan Opera, this Saturday at noon on KWTU Classical 88.7 FM!
THE LOCAL BEAT
"...the most pro-life state in the country..." Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has signed into law one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country. The bill took effect immediately with Stitt's signature on Tuesday, and prohibits abortion once cardiac activity can be detected in the embryo.

Reparations lawsuit moves forward. An Oklahoma judge ruled Monday that a lawsuit can proceed that seeks reparations for survivors and descendants of victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The lawsuit was filed in 2020 under the state's public nuisance law.

"I love a place that hates me." M.J. and Dominik live in the Tulsa area, they're juniors in high school, and they're transgender. In this first report from their listening tour to hear from Oklahoma youth, StateImpact talks with these two friends about how they navigate life in a state that doesn't seem to want them.
KEEPING BODY & SOUL TOGETHER
TU grad makes good. Talk about beloved: Susie Dumond's debut novel, Queerly Beloved, has received raves from none other than Casey McQuiston, author of Red, White & Royal Blue. Major City Books welcomes Dumond back to Tulsa tonight at 7:00p.m. for her book launch event at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center!

May the 4th be with you...and NPR. Raise your hand if you knew this: Back in 1981, the juggernaut that was Star Wars came to...NPR. How our network dove into the radio drama business...how George Lucas sold them the rights for a buck...and how sound engineers edited it all together the old-fashioned way (with a razor blade and sticky tape!)...right HERE

Tiny Desk at The Blue Note. Talk about sublime: Take a renowned NYC jazz venue, add a legendary bassist, throw in a Tiny Desk...and magic happens. Take a listen as Ron Carter and his trio play some tunes for NPR's Tiny Desk at The Blue Note in Manhattan.  Perfection.

And please...stay safe, friends.
