Two women protesting for better wages and working conditions during the 1909 New York City Shirtwaist Strike, the largest strike by American women workers up to that date. Two years later, a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in the same city would take the lives of 146 garment workers, most of them women and girls of Italian and Jewish decent. The two events would help expose the dangerous conditions of many workers and led to significant reforms. Photo credit: Wikimedia Commons
Activists Past and Present:
Women and LGBTQI+ Communities
at Sites of Conscience
“Even in the darkest times, we must believe we can join forces and create new healing possibilities.”
- Suzanne Pred Bass, Executive Board Member at the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition

Despite facing no shortage of discrimination and challenges, women – past and present – have been at the forefront of some of the world’s most influential social and political movements.

In this Newsletter, we are proud to highlight below three Sites of Conscience - Asociacion Pasaje Begoña (Spain), Museo Internacional para la Democracia (Argentina), and Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition (USA) – that are amplifying women’s histories of activism and their indelible contributions to supporting human rights, including those of migrants, laborers, and LGBTQI+ communities.

In addition, we invite you to explore our (Extra)Ordinary Women Campaign, for which Sites of Conscience around the world nominated women in their communities who are making positive impacts through initiatives that support memory, human rights, and holistic transitional justice processes. View the campaign here.

Justice for All: Remembering the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
The Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition, a Site of Conscience in New York City, is dedicated to informing the public about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911 through public projects, educational outreach, and social media. In this conversation, the Coalition talks with Suzanne Pred Bass, a member of the site's Executive Board, about how this tragedy inspired - both past and present - movements and policies that protect the rights of the most marginalized workers, including immigrants and women.
Creating the Platform: Museo Internacional para la Democracia
Located in Rosario, Argentina, Museo Internacional para la Democracia is an inclusive space dedicated to promoting the values of freedom, justice, democracy, and respect for human rights. In this interview, Gustavo Meoño Brenner, Coordinator of Memory and Human Rights at the Site of Conscience, talks about how the Museum’s involvement with women and LGBTQI+ communities supports the enrichment of human rights for all.
Call Her By Her Name: Manolita’s Story
Asociacion Pasaje Begoña, located in Torremolinos, Spain, was established in 2018 to honor the estimated 100,000 victims who perished under the Franco dictatorship. Since its creation, the Site of Conscience has worked to secure and expand the rights of marginalized groups, including LGBTQI+ communities. In this interview, Asociacion Pasaje Begoña talks with Spanish artist and businesswoman Manuela Saborido Muñoz - better known by her stage name, Manolita Chen - about her work with LGBTQI+ communities and her experiences being one of the first trans women in Spain to receive permission to legally change her name and sex.

The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience is a global network of historic sites, museums, and memory initiatives connecting past struggles to today's movements for human rights and social justice.
