Day by Day

Last week, we submitted some minor revisions to our licensing documents that the Department of Education requested. Among them was a change to the format of our daily schedule to describe how students spend their time. We had long conversations about this, because of course in a Montessori program, we don’t have dedicated blocks of time for each subject. We have guidelines and expectations about how much time, on average, a child will spend on each subject each week. But the strength of Montessori education is that almost nothing children do is restricted to one subject area. When a child writes a song about the roots they’ve observed growing from a seed sprouting experiment, is that science? Music? Language? Performance? It’s a little bit of everything.

Children are capable of so much creativity, and of approaching their learning with so much depth. Our work is to present key lessons, provide a structure for practice and follow up, and then get out of the way! And so, revising our schedule to celebrate the work of children and adults became a time to both reminisce about our past classes and envision what this space will look like in the fall. We can’t wait.

A Noticing Walk

We think it’s finally safe to say it: it’s spring! With the season comes beautiful weather, inviting us to spend a little more time outdoors.

The next time you walk somewhere with your child, even if it’s only to the bus stop, you can try playing a noticing game. It’s simple: just walk for a few moments, and then ask a question about something you’ve recently passed. Some good ones are: what was the color of the door on the right? How many windows were on the front of that building? Was there a trash can at the last corner? Trade questions back and forth and you’ll quickly realize how many things there are to notice that you might never have seen before.

Coming Up

We expect to hear about licensing in about a month. We’ll keep you updated on our progress, and let you know when it’s time to celebrate!

Each Wednesday from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Carmen will be at Hyacinth so that you can visit. While we’re not completely set up yet, we have all the major pieces in place, and you’ll be able to see what the final space is going to look like.

Due to the fact that we both work with young children, please plan to wear a mask when you visit.

If Wednesdays don’t work for you, please send us an email at info@hyacinthmontessori.org to set up a different time. We’ll look forward to showing you around!
