Why keep an old 12 year cow? Danny asked while I showed him, his wife & kiddos our cow herd on a recent farm tour.
Like our land and machinery, a cow is a farm asset. Her job is to wean off a calf every year that makes the farm money.
That calf is sold, kept to be a cow in the herd or fed and harvested for beef. That’s how our cows earn their keep on the farm every year.
As a kid, I loved watching mama cows from my saddle as we rode horseback through the pastures of the family’s 18,000 acre ranch.
These days, I watch the cows grazing the pastures closest to our house from our back porch. So calming, especially with a cup of coffee in hand as the sun rises.
A Mama cow…
Carries her calf for 9 months (same as human mamas!)
Gives birth a 70-lb calf unassisted
Recognizes her calf by scent
Chases off anything she perceives as threatening her calf (humans included!)
To us farmers, a good cow is mild mannered, gets pregnant every year and has a big udder full of milk to raise a heavy calf.
As a mom myself, I’m glad us human mamas aren’t judged by the same standards 😜😆
But, one thing is the same: like a cow, every mama is truly an asset to her family.
