Pepper Party

May is here and Mother’s Day is right around the corner!  We have baskets for Full Sun, Part Sun, and Shade areas, and I’m sure the moms in your life would love looking at a pretty basket in their yard.  Our Mixed Sun baskets are exceptionally popular, they are popping with colors! Calibrachoa, Verbena, Lobelia, Petunias, Diascia, Potato Vine… the list goes on.  We highly recommend coming by and looking at them.  It’s that magical time of year where the benches are full of color as well as the canopy of baskets overhead.

This year we have expanded the variety of peppers that we are growing.  For those that enjoy peppers with a real bite to them, the Carolina Reaper may find it’s way into your garden this year.  The Carolina Reaper measures an average of 1,569,300 on the scoville scale.  The scoville scale measures the spiciness of chili peppers.  Carolina Reapers are near the top, but there are some peppers that are measured to be even hotter.  We also have some other popular spicy peppers that we have grown in the past, like Habanero, Super Chili, Cayenne, and Serrano.  The Trident Poblano has also made its way into our inventory this year.  Who else loves chile relleno?  For those that like the milder peppers, we have quite a few that measure quite low on the scoville scale.  We have a handy poster in our pepper section that has all our peppers in order of spiciest to mildest to make it easier to decide which ones are best for you.  Our bell pepper selection has also expanded, now featuring the Purple Beauty bell pepper.  Purple fruits and vegetables may contain higher levels of antioxidants, which is a great reason to add them to your garden this year!

Another new plant to us this year is Borage.  Several of you have asked about it in the past, and we finally got our hands on it!  Borage is an herb and is a wonderful addition to a garden.  In the summer, bright blue flowers bloom, attracting butterflies and other pollinators to your garden.  Plant near your vegetable garden to make sure all the pollinators are helping you out! Borage is an old-fashioned plant, and the flowers used to be used as a garnish.  Some people candy them to use in confections.  The leaves are hairy but are noted to taste like cucumbers.

Happy May,
Sarah Messenger
