River HomeLink mural springs from the imagination of teacher Alesa Corrin

Alesa Corrin's imagination has long been a place she can escape to. Even today, the fourth-year teacher at River Online admits she doodles constantly. One such doodle, of the River HomeLink mascot Lynx, was noticed by Principal Matt Kesler who asked Corrin if she would like to paint a mural on the east wall of the building's common area. With help from the school's art teachers, Corrin got her idea sketched out and approved. Since then Corrin, art teacher Anita Hindberg, parent volunteers and others have been working several nights a week to complete the mural. Fairytale characters spring from the imagination of a young Lynx who has fallen asleep while reading a book. If you look hard enough, you might even spot the legendary Bigfoot somewhere on the wall. Corrin says it's been fun to see parents and students stopping to stare at the mural.

Battle Ground bands win big at Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival

Our middle and high school bands and student musicians brought home plenty of hardware from the Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival held Saturday, April 16 in Pleasant Hill, Oregon. For Battle Ground High School, their Advanced Jazz Band finished first in the AAA division. The Jazz Combo band took home first in the Combo division and the Intermediate Jazz Band came in 2nd in the AA division. Ian Arellano and Avery Hemming won outstanding musician awards in their divisions, while Hemming added an outstanding musician award for the entire festival.

The middle school bands also did well, with the Chief Umtuch Advanced Jazz Band finishing first and Tukes Valley coming in second. Tukes Valley's Grace Wing and Chief's Ekaterina Kalinina also won outstanding musician awards.

Congratulations to all of you!

BGHS and Prairie sweep at Charter College Spring Weld-Off

Students at Battle Ground and Prairie high schools recently swept the top five spots in the Charter College Spring Weld-Off held on Friday, April 15. Prairie students Thomas Fallon (junior) and Lucas Lyle (senior) finished in first and fourth place. Battle Ground High School students Jacob Dickey (junior), Justin Tamez (senior) and Thomas Sauser (senior) came in 2nd, 3rd and 5th place respectively. Students were evaluated on a written exam, welding fit, stick welding and gas metal arc welding. Prizes included scholarship money, welding equipment and more. It's a high honor for our students, but also for the CTE welding programs at both high schools.

Battle Ground Police Activities League visits Captain Strong Primary

Students at Captain Strong Primary School had the chance to check out a Battle Ground Police cruiser and visit with officers representing the Police Activities League earlier this week. The visit is a joint effort with the Police Activities League (PAL) of Southwest Washington. They visit schools to connect with students, answer questions and explain what a police officer or sheriff's deputy does. Learn more about their work by visiting the PAL of SW Washington website.
