STUDY CONFIRMS THAT RCC KEEPS THE LOCAL ECONOMY STRONG

Riverside City College is truly the community’s college. A recent economic impact study conducted for the District, confirmed that RCC plays an integral role in keeping our local economy strong and is a primary source of higher education to residents in this community and a supplier of trained workers.

The study examined the economic impact of fiscal year 2019 through 2020 and assessed the spending of the District and RCC in their respective operations, and investigated the economic contributions created on the business community and the benefits generated in return for the investments made by key stakeholder groups.

The results clearly showed that RCC is a sound investment for students, alumni, and local taxpayers. Highlights of the study include:

  • RCC added $354.3 million in income to the economy in the College’s service area, approximately 1.7% of the total gross regional product
  • The College’s total impact supported 4,795 regional jobs
  • One out of every 52 jobs in Riverside, and Jurupa Valley is supported by the activities of RCC and its students
  • For every dollar of public money invested in RCC, taxpayers will receive a cumulative value of $1.40 over the course of the students’ working lives
  • For every dollar a student invests in RCC in the form of out-of-pocket expenses and forgone time and money, they will receive a cumulative value of $6.70 in higher future earning
RCC creates value from multiple perspectives. It benefits society as a whole by creating a more prosperous economy and generating a variety of savings through the improved lifestyles of its students.

“I know that the community realizes who we are and understands what we do, but I don't think the communities we serve comprehend the fiscal impact generated by the colleges, students and our alumni," Wolde-Ab Isaac, RCCD Chancellor said.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Denise Silva

RCC is where many students find their passion. It is where Denise Silva obtained almost all of her education. It is where she learned how to draw, paint, sculpt, oil paint, figure draw and gained an understanding of different media.

Silva has grown from the excited young student to a talented artist whose work is on display in the Black Lives Matter exhibition at the RCCD Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties.“

"My experience at RCC was great. The professors are amazing artists themselves. I loved when they shared their personal work, it made me feel like someone who is an actual artist was teaching me," Silva, Art alumna said.

It was through the inspiration, talents, and support of her professors that Silva became a successful artist. "We dream about seeing our work displayed and appreciated by others," she said. "But putting your work on the wall and having people critique it can be tough. My professors taught me how to be strong, they built my confidence." The Art program shaped Silva's life and career in many ways and she is grateful for the opportunities and experiences the program and College provided.

Black Lives Matter: Voices of Protest, Activism, and Art is a dynamic exhibition that brings together 29 Southern California based artists whose work is expressed through various mediums including: painting, photography, mosaics, and more. The exhibition is on display until July 8 at the RCCD Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties.

This newsletter will regularly spotlight students from among the thousands of inspirational stories we hear. If you know a student who should be highlighted, please share relevant information with Heidi Gonsier in the office of the president.
