National Indigenous Peoples Day
 Tuesday June 21
Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day, formerly called National Aboriginal Day, is annually held on June 21 to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding achievements of the nation’s Aboriginal peoples. There are three Aboriginal groups in Canada – the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Handprints Memorial
Help us create and decorate handprints at Eastside Family Place to honour and remember the 1000's of children's graves discovered at Residential Schools across Canada.

Watch this brief video by author and activist, Monique Gray Smith, where she shares tips on both talking to kids about Residential Schools, but also how to prepare yourself as the adult to have these conversations. The video is for parents, grandparents, educators...anyone with children in their lives.  (Also, see our book corner below, where we highlight one of her books).

June is Pride Month
In June, many communities across Canada celebrate Pride Month. It is a time when we celebrate diversity and LGBTQIA2S+, acknowledge their history, the hardships they have endured, and the progress that has been made.
LGBTQIA2S+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual and Two-Spirit communities.

This vibrant picture book encourages children to show love and support for each other and to consider each other's well-being in their everyday actions.

Monique Gray Smith is a Canadian writer of Cree, Lakota and Scottish descent based in Victoria, BC.  The book is available at VPL. Sun Safety for Children

Summer Solstice is June 21st!  And that means more sun!
We all need some sun exposure. When skin is exposed to the sun, our bodies make vitamin D
which helps the body absorb calcium for stronger, healthier bones.

Too much unprotected exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause skin and eye damage.
Try to keep toddlers and children out of the sun during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is when the sun is the strongest. When you are outside, look for trees and other naturally shady areas for children to play. If possible, use a sun umbrella if you can’t find a shady spot. If you cannot keep your child out of the sun, make sure to protect their skin with “sun smart” clothing and sunscreen.
