Dear friends and partners,

Happy Earth Day! As we continue working to prepare every LAUSD student for future success, we are also taking action to create a more sustainable future for our kids and communities. Today, we celebrated the launch of LAUSD’s districtwide air monitoring system, which was completed as part of my 2019 resolution, following wildfires in recent years, to identify and reduce air pollution with publicly available data across all our school communities. I was also proud to join the next generation of changemakers for an Earth Day Climate Summit at Pali High.

Our mission to build a better District for kids and families isn’t limited to environmental stewardship, and we’ve made exciting progress toward the goals outlined in our Superintendent’s 100-Day Plan. We’ve taken steps to get more educators into classrooms despite nationwide hiring shortages, close the digital divide with stable, affordable connectivity solutions for families, launch a wide-ranging array of summer learning and enrichment opportunities, expand access to high-quality early education, and more.

As the sun sets on another Earth Day, change is on the horizon at LAUSD. I will keep pushing for the student-centered decisions and common-sense solutions we need to drive progress for our kids and families.

Onward,

I was excited to welcome our kids, families, and staff back from spring break this week! In addition to our Earth Day events at Hesby Oaks and Pali HS, I visited Lanai ES and Westside Global Awareness Magnet, engaged with parents in the Fairfax Community of Schools, and met with school principals from Local District West.
In the Spotlight: WESM grad launched into his dream aerospace career
Luis Dominguez, the son of immigrants from Mexico and Honduras and proud product of LAUSD schools, discovered in interest in aerospace at an early age. He graduated from Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet, which helped fuel his passion and hone his focus toward a future career. From there, Dominguez went on to Cal Poly Pomona, majored in mechanical engineering—and after landing a part-time student internship at JPL, he knew he had found his calling. Fifteen years later, Dominguez is still at JPL, now as the lead electrical engineer on the Psyche satellite, which is slated to launch from Cape Canaveral this August. We're excited to cheer him on and proud to see his journey take flight from LAUSD to outer space!
