EARTH DAY 2022

“If you expect to survive into the middle of the 21st century, you might just get to watch Miami die... But not before the changing climate stretches the city's already yawning gap between rich and poor past its breaking point.” - Mario Ariza

Want to get involved in the fight against climate change in Miami? Florida Rising is asking Miamians to take action this Earth Day weekend. We are encouraging our members to attend their event Clean Air in Doral.

Working Group Updates and Announcements

LABOR WORKING GROUP
The Labor Working Group has been very active lately. We hosted two awesome organizers from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers last month, and joined the CIW in their march to end modern slavery on April 3rd. We showed up for the workers! We are still collecting funds for the CIW; you can donate here

We also held a Working Group meeting at the Unite Here! office yesterday. Speakers from Unite Here! spoke to us about labor organizing in South Florida. We also talked about exciting trainings and solidarity work.

SOCIAL WORKING GROUP
The Social and Poli-Ed Working Groups joined forces and held an in-person event on April 8th at Paradis Books & Bread titled “Myths of Socialism: Debunked”, in which attendees spoke on things we regarded as absolute truths in regard to socialism that we later came to learn were not true. The real myth it turns out is the idea that capitalism is a fair and equitable system, in which hard workers can climb up the social and economic ladders of success to join the ranks of the bourgeoisie. It was well attended with many new faces entering our space for the first time! We encourage all of our members to attend future Social Working Group meetings to plan future events for our chapter. The next Social Working Group meeting has yet to be scheduled so be on the lookout and join the #wg-social channel in our Miami DSA Slack workspace to stay updated.

MUTUAL AID WORKING GROUP
This past weekend members of our Mutual Aid working group distributed hygiene kits at Smile Trust's Smile Day. We are also gearing up to host our first Brake Light Clinic in a number of years. You can find out more about these initiatives and make a donation to our Mutual Aid Fund at miamidsa.org/mutual-aid-working-group/, and members can get involved on the slack channel: wg-mutual-aid

DSA ACCOUNTABILITY MEETING
Last Wednesday, April 13th, some of our members gathered on Zoom to discuss how our Chapter and its members should relate to the situation that unfolded with the NPC and National BDS Working Group over the actions of Rep. Bowman. Our Internal Coordinator, Edward N, presented a summary of events at the April MMM, which you can read here. There was great conversation on having open debate with our members on how we should respond to events like these in the future. More discussions like this will be held so our members can freely discuss and engage their stances on a number of issues.
