Seasonal Snap

WELL DONE !!!

Home-made lemonade and chocolate cake sales from a pop-up stall near the War Memorial raised a staggering £249 in just 3 hours on Easter Sunday, and it was all the idea and even run by children of the village! Poppy & Leo Saville, Reuben Hamilton and Darcey Twiddy should be very proud of themselves.

New Councillor Co-opted

The Parish Council is pleased to report the co-option of Pat Firth to the remaining vacant Parish Councillor position.  We welcome Pat and look forward to working with her and using her skills to improve the village for the benefit of residents.

Playing Field phase 2 installation update

The next phase of the equipment to be installed is due to take place soon.  A meeting was held with Wicksteed and they have confirmed a collection and install date commencing 9/5/22 for the zip wire, roundabout, swings, surf rider and freestyle. We are very excited to be nearing this installation in time for the better weather and all to enjoy.

BACK TO THE SLATE MINES
Reviving the Collyweston Slate Industry
JOSHUA PARFITT

A LOCAL BOOK BY LOCALS

THIRD GENERATION LOCAL WRITER’S FIRST BOOK PUBLISHED APRIL 2022, BY LOCAL PUBLISHER, SUMMERTIME PUBLISHING

Joshua Parfitt, who lived in Church Street and attended Easton Garford School has just written his first book. A trained journalist who now lives and works in Javea, on Spain’s Costa Blanca coast, he lived at 55 Church Street, the cottage his parents christened Summertime, from the age of four. In 1999 they moved just down the road to Longacre on Main Road, Collyweston. It was from there that he and his brother Sam, and their friends, including Peter Gibbons would spend hours playing in the disused slate mines of The Deeps. The youngsters gave names to all their favourite spots: Devil’s Drop, Badger Base, Josh’s Danger Zone and even Cliff Richard. Though the family moved to the Netherlands in 2005, this is where the family have English roots. In 2020, his parents returned to Easton-on-the-Hill.

This is a local book. It so happens that Josh’s mum, Jo, author of over 30 books, started Summertime Publishing when they lived on Church Street. She has published hundreds of books since its inception in 1997 and now specialises in helping new authors get into print. Her brother, Joshua’s uncle, Patrick Gosling, himself a Stamford Schoolboy, took many of the glorious colour photographs. Peter Gibbons, their Deeps-loving school friend provided more.

Local connections do not end there. It would have been impossible to research the information required without the help of Collyweston’s Nigel Smith and Shelagh Busby, of Messenger BCR for funding, and Easton’s Paul Way who sourced the many ancient photographs that now pepper the book’s pages thanks to The Priest’s House. Joshua spent many a happy hour up on our iconic slate roofs with real live roofers in order to glean the fascinating stories that fill the full colour pages.

Yet, despite the history, the facts and the tools of this fascinating industry, this book is no heavy tome. It is written in an engaging style and enormous fun to read. Learn why slaters had to get up in the middle of a winter’s night to ‘water the logs’ and why the trade is couched in mystery and its own unique language.

Though the mines of The Deeps will remain unused, local specialists are now back in business making new stocks of our beautiful slate so that it can continue to crown our cottages, just as it has done for hundreds of years.

Curate on the Hill

I hope everyone had a very happy Easter. Whatever your beliefs, it is a season of resurrection and renewal. Nature is showing the way with the changes in weather, the flowering of plants and the growth from sown seeds. In the Church we celebrate the resurrection of Christ from Easter Sunday up until Pentecost Which this year is 5th June. You might know Pentecost as Whitsun The season of Easter is a time for celebration and joy. It sits in stark contrast to the season of Lent.

I imagine, like me, people in our villages are looking forward to the weather improving getting out and about and socialising more? Also on the horizon is the Jubilee weekend. As the Queen is the Head of the Church of England, it will be another reason to celebrate and rejoice.

There seems to be a bit of a theme here? I am feeling the need to celebrate. Although Covid is still part of our lives, it appears to be a different aspect of life to that of the darkest days of a worldwide pandemic. I do reflect on those who, for whatever reason, still feel the same pressures. Whether due to being Clinically vulnerable, unable to be vaccinated or suffering with the mental strain of the last two years. I also think of all those who don’t live somewhere that has had the vaccination roll out we have been able to have.

My focus over the Easter season will be on sharing the Easter joy with as many people as possible. Whether we see it or not, the world is still full of beauty and joy and I encourage us all to look afresh around us in childlike wonder at the beauty everywhere.

Every Blessing

Paws for Thought
The Theological Education of Rectory Puppy

Welcome to the next instalment of the continuing theological education of Jessie (The rectory puppy) under the wise tutelage of Lexie (a wise old dog with formal theological training and many years’ experience)

Jessie: Lent was hard.
Lexie: Yes, but Easter’s great, isn’t it?
Jessie: Oh yes, but Rev Keir said we cannot eat chocolate.
Lexie: Yes, it is poisonous to dogs.
Jessie: I think it is just an excuse so that Rev Keir can eat it all.
Lexie: We did get extra bones and sausages.
Jessie: But it only lasted one day, lent went on forever.
Lexie: That is where you are wrong.
Jessie: What????
Lexie: Easter lasts until Pentecost, at the beginning of June.
Jessie: You mean there is more Easter celebration?
Lexie: Yes, but people tend to forget.
Jessie: I see, in that case I am going to remind everyone.
Lexie: How are you going to do that.
Jessie: Well, Easter is about Joy?
Lexie: Yes.
Jessie: And if Easter lasts so long we should share joy.
Lexie: Yes.
Jessie: I am going to greet everyone I meet with joy and love.
Lexie: I love your enthusiasm but I am not sure people will notice a change, that is how you greet them anyway.
Jessie: Yes, I know but now Lent is over, I can jump up at people again.
Lexie: I know you gave up jumping up for lent, that doesn’t mean you should go right back afterwards.
Jessie: Why not?
Lexie: Well that period of Lent is supposed to teach you something.
Jessie: Like what?
Lexie: How to live a better life.
Jessie: Hmmm, Not sure about that.
Lexie: Did people prefer you not jumping up?
Jessie: Yes, but…
Lexie: Perhaps a way of showing love and Joy might involve not jumping up?
Jessie: I suppose?
Lexie: So now you have used your lent challenge to improve yourself.
Jessie: Well, I sort of get it.
Lexie: It is all about reminding ourselves of love and joy and leading a better life.
Jessie: I’m just glad I didn’t give up sausages, that would’ve been awful.

Triple B Club

We're launching our 2022 season with an open day on Sunday 15 May. And we want as many people as possible to join us! Having benefitted from a very generous government donation during lockdown, we want to show you how we put this money to good use. Our 'best view of the village' will be open to all.

We'll start at 12, and light the barbecue. All you need is a bottle (or three), something to 'throw' on the barbie and the odd bag of crisps. Think of it as Fizzy Friday with balls. Not that you'll be obliged to play, but the option will be open to you!  (And we go way beyond bowls now!).

Come take in the view, enjoy the convivial company, and bask in the sunshine!!

For those who don't know where the green is - go through the gate at the back of the peace garden, and turn right.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Queens Jubilee Street Party That's Not A Street Party
The Blue Bell
Sunday 5th June 12pm-5pm

If you aren’t attending a street party to celebrate the Queens Jubilee then why not join us at The Blue Bell instead?

We are hosting a friendly and informal get together in the marquee (so we can also stay dry if the weather isn’t in the mood to celebrate!).

The marquee will be decorated to add to the atmosphere and you can watch the events taking place up and down the country on the big screen, with your friends and neighbours.

This is a picnic style gathering and so please bring whatever food you and your group or family will best enjoy, be it cakes and sandwiches or a full afternoon tea!

The bar will be open (so please don’t bring your own drinks!) so that we can toast this momentous occasion together as a community.

We would love to celebrate with you and hope to see you on the 5th…..

 Decorations

We will be decorating the Queens Jubilee Marquee on Wednesday 1st June and would love to see it full of red, white and blue, so if you have any bunting or can make some for us, please do donate it (or let us borrow it!).

Alternatively, if you have any materials in red, white and blue that could be turned into decorations/bunting, please let us know and we will arrange to collect it.  We will take ANYTHING that’s clean, so clothing, bedding, table cloths – really ANYHING that can be cut into shapes.

We are also looking for crafty support; so if you are handy with a sewing machine and have a few hours to spare we would really like your help  to turn the materials into decorations.

Please contact Tracy Auchterlonie on 0743 7179009 to either donate/ let us borrow or volunteer to make decorations / bunting.

Let’s Get Festive!!!

As well as the celebrations taking place at The Blue Bell over the Jubilee weekend it would be great to see houses, fences and hedges decorated in red, white and blue - or any colour you like!!

There was a brilliant effort made for the VE commemorations in 2020 and it brought the village together in the difficult lockdown period; to replicate this would give the weekend a real lift when walking round our beautiful village.

Even if you just colour in a flag and pop it in your window it will make someone smile as they walk by, so if you are able (and willing!) please join in.
