We are finally back to our regular schedule of first and third Sundays at the Barley Mow on Merivale. We haven't resumed the House Sessions or Reel Slooow Jams yet, but stay tuned for news of outdoor garden sessions during the summer.

The events listed here are scheduled, but these days it's always best to double check that events are still on before you leave the house. We'll do our best to update the website and Facebook group page with any cancellations.

OTHER EVENTS
Sun. Apr. 24 - House Concert 3pm or 7pm. North American Irish Fiddle Champion Kyle Burghout joins forces with flute/whistle/uilleann pipe player Justin Thériault and Celtic harpist Susan Toman to perform a collection of traditional and contemporary Celtic music from Ireland, Scotland, and Canada. The concert will feature accompanying anecdotes about the history of the tunes and stories from the trio’s travels. This is a rare opportunity for audiences to hear three of Ottawa’s leading traditional musicians performing in concert together. Kyle, Justin, and Susan generously agreed to do two house concerts on the same day in order to keep attendance limited to 15 guests at each concert. As this is a private home, all attendees are asked to be fully vaccinated and wear masks during the concert. More...

Open Jam Sessions: 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at locations as specified on the website. Sessions are led by Aylene, or sometimes other folks. This session is a mix of session and solo playing, let us know if you have something special to share with the group. Sheet music permitted. Generally a pretty fast pace.

House Sessions: 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month 2pm-5pm various locations. More of a practice session, slower pace for learning new tunes. Mainly aimed at those who read music or learn by ear quickly. For intermediate/advanced players.

Reel Slooow Jams: The Reel Slooow Jam is an occasional and irregular gathering for those who are new to playing fiddle (or piano or guitar) and who would like to learn Cape Breton tunes. The focus is on tunes such as airs and waltzes, as well as playing jigs and reels from the session repertoire but at a slow learning pace with more time for those who don't read music to learn by ear.

How to Host a House Session
All you need is a space big enough to put 6-8 fiddlers in, some chairs without arms, and a willingness to listen to the same tune played over and over again as we practice. If you have a piano let us know, otherwise we'll bring our own keyboard. We can also bring folding chairs. Sessions are BYOB but usually the hosts provide some non-alcoholic beverages and a little something for snack time. Interested? Talk to Aylene or send an email to cbsession@cbsession.com.
