CVHEC Founder Welty Returns for Summit and 20th Anniversary
In 2000, then-Fresno State President John D. Welty and other area higher education leaders made history by creating the Central Valley Higher Education Consortium (CVHEC) to increase the college-going rate in the Valley’s nine-county region from San Joaquin to Kern counties.

They summoned the chief executives of 23 area colleges and universities for “a seamless higher education system that would be vital to the Valley’s future.”

This year for its 20th anniversary, the Consortium – now with 29 members from Stockton to Bakersfield whose presidents and chancellors make up the CVHEC Board of Directors – will reunite with President-Emeritus Welty at its HIGHER EDUCATION POLICY AND LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT May 6,

CVHEC Summit May 5-6: 'Post Pandemic World:

Recovering with Equity and Inclusion in the Central Valley'

Greetings and welcome to our April e-newsletter.

This is a special issue that highlights your first live Central Valley Higher Education Consortium Higher Education Policy and Legislative Summit since the pandemic-shutdown two years ago and inviting you to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Consortium.

This year's summit with the theme, “The Post Pandemic World: Recovering with Equity and Inclusion in the Central Valley,” May 5-6 will focus on the good work the members of the consortium have been doing on their campus in spite of the limitations imposed on us all by the pandemic.

As the theme indicates, the conditions brought on by the shutdown of campuses due to the COVID19 virus highlighted some inequalities on our campuses that demanded attention.  In the post pandemic world, our college and university campuses will be much more attentive and responsive to creating environments that take into account, equity, inclusion, diversity and social justice.  If you will be joining us, we know you will find value in the panels on the program.

We also invite you to join us as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of CVHEC in 2022.  A special bonus for the day is the attendance of Dr. John Welty, President-Emeritus of California State University, Fresno and the founder of the Consortium.  He will be joined by a couple of other founding members to discuss the origins and the issues that led to the establishment of CVHEC.

We hope you enjoy this issue of our monthly e-newsletter and we look forward to seeing those of you who are able to join us next week at the summit (do come in for our Cinco de Mayo Reception at 5:30 p.m. on
Thursday).  Registration for our free event is open through May 2 at bit.ly/CVHEC2022Summit

The pair will elaborate on their comments in CVHEC’s broadband access video sharing their broadband experiences during the pandemic as well as their collegiate experience in general.

Also sharing their experiences will be dual enrollment students Nataly Frias of Turlock,  Alicia Bias of Washington Union High School (Fresno) and Isaac Bates of Corcoran High School who were featured in a CVHEC video on dual enrollment that was released last month as well as Brianna Zatarain of Delano.
