Community History Newsletter

April 2022
With this newsletter, we warmly welcome the blooming of the spring season in Oxford.

As ever, there are many interesting projects organised by community historians happening in and around the city. This newsletter highlights some of the upcoming events and opportunities to get involved with. Please read on to find out more!

Work is ongoing towards the building of the History Faculty's new community history digital hub, which we are aiming to launch by the end of this Trinity Term (mid-June). We would be delighted to welcome your contributions to these webpages, to make them reflective of the wide range of History-related research and public activity that is going on throughout the city and the county. Details of how you can get involved can be found below.

Our pioneering community history internships - led in partnership with the Afrikan Caribbean Kultral Heritage Initiative, Everyday Muslim, and the Museum of Oxford - have now completed their work. You'll soon be able to read about the interns' experiences on the new blog that will be featured on the digital hub. We are now excited to be working with our community partners to develop the next phase of research and public engagement plans. We hope to soon be able to widen available opportunities for community participants and Faculty members to shape the work and outputs of our existing research projects on local Muslim and Black history. Do get in touch if you'd like to help with this.

We are also keen to build further supportive working relationships with a wide range of partners, interested in all periods of Oxford and Oxfordshire's history. We'd love to hear from you on whatever historical subject you might be researching: whether it's archaeological ruins, Tudor relics, car factories, gargoyles, sports teams... just let us know! We'd be happy to help you consider how to take your research further and to build collaborative connections with a wide range of colleagues throughout our local community.

If you would like to get in touch, please do email us at community@history.ox.ac.uk. We'd love to hear about your ideas and news!

With all best wishes,

Dr Priya Atwal and Professor Stephen Tuck
(The Faculty's Community History Team)

Community History in the Spotlight
On 4 May, the 'Opening Oxford 1871-' Project will be hosting an evening of interfaith musical celebration at the Sheldonian Theatre. This free concert will be the project's keynote event in its year-long commemoration of the passing of the 1871 University Tests Act: a moment that eventually transformed the city of Oxford, by opening up the University's membership to non-Anglicans for the first time. The musical programme will honour the diversity of Oxford's residents, and feature performances from artists and groups representing a variety of musical traditions: including the Gurmat Sangeet Academy, The Choir of New College, Klezjammers, Robert Quinney, OxfordShir and Younis Ghulam Nabi.

This event is not to be missed! Get your free ticket here.

Our New Website: Get Involved

We will be launching our new Community History hub on the History Faculty website soon! We warmly welcome your ideas and contributions for making this new digital space as reflective as possible of the richness and variety of Oxford/Oxfordshire's community history activity. Please get in touch if you have:
  • A recent or ongoing local/community history project that you'd like to have featured on our site, with its own profile page. To set up your page, we'd need you to submit a summary of your project (of no more than 400 words), an email contact and any relevant web links for your work, plus any pictures/videos/audio that you can share with us to make your page as dynamic as possible!
  • Ideas for a blog post on 'ways of doing community history.' We are looking to publish short written pieces (of up to 1000 words), on a rolling basis, reflecting on the meaning, practicalities and value of working in community history. If you might be interested, please send us a short summary (of up to 100 words) for your ideas. We welcome submissions from people from any part of our city and county.
Please email your ideas to community@history.ox.ac.uk - we look forward to hearing from you!
