Green Built Guide: April 2022

Share Your Projects and Expertise with Features in 2022 Green Building Directory

We are starting the process of planning our 2022 Green Building Directory. With 25,000 copies distributed at 100 spots in Western North Carolina, this directory is a great way to share your company's offerings in the broader community and market your brand for high visibility in a targeted demographic.

We include listings for all members at the business level and higher, and there are several ways you can benefit from even more visibility in our latest issue publishing this summer.
  1. Contribute content. Each year, our directory is enriched with article features and case studies written by our members and about their projects. To be included, email story ideas to cari@greenbuilt.org ASAP. Content is due May 31.

  2. Place an ad or enhance your listing. Review ad ratesthen email sophia.b@smokymountainnews.com to reserve. Enjoy a discount before the early-bird deadline on May 27.

  3. Become a member. Whether you're joining for the first time or renewing after a lapse, there's no better time to become a member and benefit from all the related marketing exposure. For inclusion, memberships must be active by July 1.

As our industry continues to expand, the annual Green Building Directory offers a unique opportunity to position your company for future growth and increase market share. Confirm your presence in our directory and help our nonprofit advance regional awareness of green building, sustainability and your company's services.

Spring Continuing-Education Class Series Begins One Week From Today

Next week, Green Built Alliance will launch our spring schedule of continuing-education courses that will fulfill the six elective hours required annually by North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors, as well as being eligible for credit through American Institute of Architects and certain other trade organizations.

For four consecutive weeks in May starting a week from today, we'll host virtual classes via Zoom from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays with discounts for members and free equitable access tickets available to individuals who identify as BIPOC and LGBTQ.

All four available classes are approved hours for general contractors as well as architects, and also count toward our new Regenerative Professional Accreditation credential that acknowledges a deep, evolving competency in advanced green-building best practices.

Our spring series brings back some of our most popular classes from past offerings. Stay tuned for new classes to come this fall.

***** For the two-hour mandatory course required for GCs, we are referring to TrainingFolks, which has an asynchronous e-learning option for the class. You can receive a $10 discount off each course you purchase when you use Green Built Alliance’s coupon code — NCGC0109 — at checkout. Visit this website to register.

Fond Farewells to Departing Staff Members

The past month has marked the departure of three of our nonprofit's staff members: Green Built Homes Program Manager Josh LittleJohn, Blue Horizons Project Manager Sophie Mullinax, and Blue Horizons Project Coordinator Beatrice Nathan.

After spending several years prior on our Board of Directors, Josh came on staff last spring to guide our Green Built Homes program into a new season of growth. He also was instrumental in coordinating future projects for our Appalachian Offsets program, and was known on our staff for his ethic of service and sense of humor.

Over the past four years, Sophie brought Blue Horizons Project from concept to reality as its first program manager. A strong advocate for equity and justice, Sophie guided our work with an abundant well of energy and passion for the local community. She made an enduring impact on the clean-energy movement regionally.

Beatrice joined Green Built Alliance in late 2020 to support the Blue Horizons Project's community engagement efforts. We benefited from her passion for grassroots environmental advocacy, as well as her creativity in cultivating new outlets for community connection including our Home Energy Chats and video content.

We are grateful for the effort and energy Josh, Sophie and Beatrice invested in Green Built Alliance, and excited to see what they do next with their gifts. Stay tuned to next month's newsletter to meet the new staff members who will help grow our programs in the future.

Thanks to Our Board of Directors +
Invitation for New Members to Join

Every spring, our nonprofit says goodbye with gratitude to several members rolling off our Board of Directors while looking forward to welcoming new expertise and perspective to advise our work.

We are currently seeking interest from new individuals to join our Board of Directors and support our work in advancing sustainable living, green building and climate justice in our community. Board members serve two-year terms with the option of renewal.

Climate-Conscious Banking Option Supports Our Nonprofit

As some of our members have expressed interest in divesting from banks that support fossil fuels and other polluting industries, Green Built Alliance has created a new partnership with Atmos Financial. With no fees, no minimum balance, and 100 percent of customer deposits invested in clean-energy solutions, Atmos will donate $40 to Green Built Alliance in April or $20 thereafter for each new account.

Member Spotlight:
JAG & Associates Construction

Thanks to our longtime leadership-circle members at JAG Construction, who are also one of our program's top certifiers of Green Built Homes.

JAG Construction is a small company specializing in in-town urban spec construction. Our goal is to make healthy, creative, long-lasting houses more available to the general public. We're examining new ways to reduce the impact of construction on the environment around us and preparing for a future of alternative energy.
