Our current laser cutter, a Glowforge Pro, has been a very popular piece of equipment used by our community of hobbyists, entrepreneurs/small business owners, and youth.

As a way to increase accessibility to this powerful tool, we're raising funds to purchase a 2nd laser cutter: Thunder Laser NOVA 35 with additional functionality to support innovative ideas while still keeping the ease-of-use for all skill levels.

Makin' Mural Art...

We are thrilled with our beautiful new murals on our makerspace! Thanks HUGE to Elaine Stephenson, our awesome member who shared her professional muralist skills with us! Check out her art: elainestephenson.com. And thanks to all of the creative volunteers who came out to paint.

We are beyond excited to be partnering with Rickman Architecture + Design (RAD) on our renovations planning inside and outside our makerspace! Their mission as a creative, collaborative, research based, social enterprise continuously making an effort to impact the community aligns closely with ours. Stay tuned for our updates!

Community Outreach...

We had the honor of hearing a design pitch presentation by students from the Coretta Scott King Young Women's Leadership Academy who are designing and prototyping a GoCart in prep for a build with donated materials for their STEAM Day. In a collaboration between Physics and Product Design classes, this Project Based Learn (PBL) project is an amazing example of students leading their learning and developing problem solving skills. Amazing job!

We're thrilled to be partnered with Agnes Scott College on a VentureWell grant-sponsored program where they're focused on "engaging student teams in developing and pursuing scalable solutions to real world needs through innovation and entrepreneurship."

Recently, the students were at Decatur Makers to pitch their human design process addressing food insecurity, shared a range of innovative ideas, and how they came to their final project choice.

What We're Learning...

Our Electronics Shop Area Steward and Decatur Makers Founder, Bill Sandidge, shared his Arduino coding skills as a pilot to a workshop he's developing. The small and novice group learned a lot! Stay tuned for a new Workshop on our calendar...

We hosted a Circuit Playground Express (CPX) microcontroller workshop for educators in our Making Spaces teacher professional development program. They got hands-on with block coding, lighting lights and making music based on input from sensors to create their own wearable technology that creatively expressed their superpower.

As a community partner, we hosted a fun hands-on workshop with educators from the Drew Charter School STEAM Beyond Boarders program funded by the Governor's Office of Student Achievement (GOSA). They molded their hands and created wood bases (thanks to B-10 Union for donating beautiful hard wood scraps) using power tools with the help of our skilled members. Their inspiring sculptures represented their gifts to the world.

Our members have been busy making some of the things that make them happy, that they can give as gifts, and/or that solve problems. Here are a few that they've shared... #makersgonnamake

Member Randall toyed around with our Ikonart screenprinting equipment to bring this idea to life: Built-in name tags.

Member DeVaughn built a beautiful custom baseball name sign for his grandson made from 3 layers of birch plywood cut on our Glowforge laser cutter.

Member Neal created this cool LED display stand made from Redbud wood finished with epoxy and 3d printed holders for the lights.
