Lecture to honour alumnus lost to gun violence
On Feb. 8, 2021, alumnus Michael Berchie lost his life as an innocent victim of gun violence. On Friday, May 27, UTM Vice-President & Principal Alexandra Gillespie and the Berchie family will host an online tribute lecture to both honour his memory and raise awareness of gun violence and its impact on innocent lives. Watch for marathon closures this Sunday
Egress to the UTM campus and to campus roadways will be affected from 6:30-9:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 1 as a result of the 2022 Mississauga Marathon. Except for emergency services vehicles, no vehicles will be permitted on the campus roadways during the closure period. Peel Regional Police and Campus Community Police will be available to assist during this time.
Please also be aware that Mississauga Road south of Dundas Street West will remain closed beyond 9:30 a.m. The shuttle will be moving to Mississauga Road and The Collegeway for the first trip at 9 a.m., and then back to the regular location for the next trip at noon. Read more.
Pump up your media skills
Canadian journalists are looking for UTM/U of T experts to share their insight.
On May 10-11 from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. (via Zoom), Media Camp 2022 will provide a high-level introduction to media work for researchers, as well as opportunities to learn from colleagues. Building on the success of Media Camp 2021, hosted by the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and School of Cities, they invite any U of T researcher or faculty member who wants to know more about the media interview process and feel more comfortable working with journalists.
At the same time, Media Camp is part of a commitment by senior leadership at UTM to ensure digital safety and share best practices in keeping online spaces safer. UTM is committed to build new resources and communities for online security — and to make them easy to access.
Thelma Abu, a postdoctoral fellow in UTM’s Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment, UTM, has earned one of nine inaugural IGNITE grants from the Black Research Network.
The grant proves Abu with $7,000 to continue her research into COVID-19 journeys of Black communities in the Greater Toronto Area.
Abu’s research focus is global health equity, specifically the social and ecological factors that determine health and wellbeing. One of her goals as a researcher is to ensure water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) for healthcare systems in the Horn of Africa and advocate for safer services for patients seeking care.
The grants were developed to provide annual small-scale research funding to support Black faculty, librarians and post-doctoral scholars working broadly in any disciplinary category at U of T. Learn more
