Honoring SAAM 2022
and the Year-Round Work of PATH to Care

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), an opportunity to promote education and prevention of sexual violence. We are each part of creating a campus environment where violence in any form is not tolerated and instead we have a culture that prioritizes consent and respect.

The PATH to Care Center leads the efforts to transform our campus into a community that is free of sexual violence, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence, and stalking through prevention, advocacy, training, and healing.

In addition to supporting survivors, PATH to Care believes prevention comes first. Visit the PATH to Care website for resources on how you can be part of preventing sexual violence.

You can also visit the Sexual Violence & Sexual Harassment website for a wealth of resources, including those on how to help someone and be an active bystander.

If you have been affected by sexual assault, intimate partner or domestic violence, sexual harassment, stalking, invasions of sexual privacy, or any related type of harm, please know there are resources available to help you.

Unsure where to start? The PATH to Care Center is a supportive place to start anytime. For urgent 24/7 confidential support, call the Care Line: 510-643-2005.

Making Connections Pilot Program

The pilot Making Connections Program concluded last month! We'd like to thank all of those who participated and provided feedback on this program. The majority of our participants were able to meet new people across campus and create new connections.

Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback, we plan to implement some exciting changes in our next cycle set to kick off in the Fall. We are currently forming a volunteer planning committee to help with this effort and welcome anyone who'd like to get involved. If you would like to participate, please reach out to us at calwomxn@berkeley.edu.

Career Advice Roundup from CWN Members

During our CWN Headshot event last month, we asked participants to share a piece of great career advice that they have received. Advice shared included:

“Walk away from any experience that doesn’t serve you. But also try to come away with a concrete skill.”

“Just ask for the meeting! Don’t hesitate and put the time on the calendar with the leadership.”

“Know your boundaries. You can’t succeed if you over commit.”

Read more career wisdom compiled from this event. Thank you to participants who shared!

Everyone who contributed was entered in a raffle for CWN swag; three cheers for our raffle prize winners: Min Choi and Allie Warren!

CWN: Get Your Professional Headshot!
SAVE THE DATE: June 21, 2022, 1-3p

What is the purpose of a headshot? One could say that it is a recognizable and professional photo of you. And this is true! But at the CWN headshot event in March, we saw that headshots are much more.

A headshot is a chance for your personality to shine through. Your image should celebrate your presence on campus and how you give your energy and heart to making a positive impact.

It is well known that women can be judged based on appearance, and this can make headshots a challenging and stressful experience. Instead, let's find joy in how our passion and commitment shines through our image. The way we each show up to work is beautiful -  we show up with passion and commitment, with humor and tears, and with our own unique styles and stories. This is what headshots should capture.

We will next have a photographer available on campus (location TBD) from 11-3pm on June 21st. Refreshments and fun will be provided!

How do you participate? We will send out a sign up sheet on Wednesday, May 25th at 8am. The sign up sheet will also have a wait list sign up available.
NEW lactation resource: Cooler Rental Program

The Wellness program lactation consultant recommends a small cooler with ice packs as the most efficient, hygienic, and safe way to store milk. Parents are encouraged to bring their own, but we now have a limited amount of personal coolers available for rent to UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students. These rentals can be signed out and renewed every 6 months. To apply for a rental, please complete this form.

Join CWN Members in the UC Moves More May Activity Challenge - Begins May 6th!

The Becoming an Antiracist Campus (BAAC) Steering Committee is soliciting proposals!

The Becoming an Antiracist Campus (BAAC) Steering Committee is soliciting proposals for near term projects that will build the university’s capacity for antiracism work in 2022 and 2023. We encourage you to consider applying for this exciting funding opportunity.

Link to application form: Becoming An Anti-Racist Campus (BAAC) Steering Committee Fund Proposal Form

Proposal Submission Deadlines:

  • Wednesday, May 11, 2022 - deadline for Spring 2022 funding (funds must be spent by 6/30/2022)
  • Monday, June 6, 2022 - deadline for 2022-2023 funding (funds must be spent between 7/1/2022-6/30/2023)

Proposals must be submitted by a recognized campus unit or organization and have a focused benefit for staff at the university. Projects may span one or both of the funding periods.

The Becoming an Antiracist Steering Committee is charged with creating a framework for antiracist work at the university, and with leading change efforts to shift the university from complicity to antiracism. We look to fund projects that build capacity, educate, compensate or incubate efforts to become an antiracist campus.

If you have any questions about the proposal process, please contact the co-chairs of the BAAC Committee, Alberto Ledesma and Margaret Hunter, at vcei@berkeley.edu.

CWN Affinity Group Updates

Cal Parents of Teens & Tweens is an informal support group, sponsored by CWN, that meets a few times a year via Zoom for lunchtime discussions of the challenges and rewards of being working parents to teenagers during these turbulent times. Past topics have included adolescent mental health, boundaries and independence, technology use, parental self-care, and the college application process.

If you'd like to be added to the mailing list, please contact group facilitator Michele Rabkin at micheler@berkeley.edu. Next meeting coming up in May!

Pets of CWN

Introducing Lord Vader & Boba Fett

Age/Name: Lord Vader (9yrs, on left) and Boba Fett (8.5yrs, on right)

Breed/Type: All black domestic short hair (Vader) and Tuxedo (Boba)

Origin Story: We rescued Lord Vader from the SPCA while living in Sacramento when he was just 10 weeks old. We adopted another littermate, but unfortunately, he developed FIP and didn’t make it. Shortly thereafter we moved to Chicago, where we knew we needed to get Vader a friend, so we rescued Boba Fett from the Chicago Cat Rescue. While there was definitely an adjustment period, they very clearly now love each other and snuggle all the time!

Favorite Toy: Both boys love anything with catnip, strings, and lasers.

Fun Fact: Vader loves to be completely tucked into blankets (purrito!), and Boba has no teeth (at all!), but still loves to eat every kind of food!

Thank you to CWN Member Sarah Gaugler for sharing Lord Vader and Boba Fett with us!
