2016 Brunello di Montalcino

Vinous Media's Eric Guido Writing in November 2020-
"If I had to think of one way to universally describe the majority of wines from the 2016 vintage, I would offer that they are like a well-muscled black stallion in its prime. They are dark yet radiant, expressive, nearly explosive at times, yet pure, poised and structured. These are wines that capture your imagination; and no matter how youthfully tense they are today, you simply can’t help but revisit a glass over and over again; because in many cases, the aromatics alone are intoxicating. I frankly cannot remember the last time I tasted young wines from Montalcino that possessed such symmetry from start to finish. The best part is that this success was widely spread throughout the region; and while there was a mix of the bad, the good and the otherworldly, finding a solidly performing bottle of 2016 Brunello di Montalcino won’t be difficult for any consumer. San Polino Brunello di Montalcino 'Helichrysum' 2016 - $75
98 points James Suckling
"Wow. This is really complex on the nose with black cherries, mushrooms, dried flowers and cedar. Some crushed stone and dry earth or tile. This is full-bodied and very layered with wonderful depth of fruit and creamy tannins. It’s focused and serene.Try in 2024 and onwards."

San Polino Brunello di Montalcino 2016 - $65
97 points James Suckling
"Attractive aromas of cherry, dark mushroom, bark and walnut follow through to a full body with lots of ripe cherry and berry character in the center palate. Firm, chewy tannins draw you down the palate. Extremely long. From organically grown grapes. Better than the superb 2015? Drink after 2023 and onwards."

Padelletti Brunello di Montalcino 2016 -  $59
95 points Vinous Media
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino comes to life in the glass, showcasing a classic bouquet of wild strawberries laced with smoky minerals and spice, before evolving further with notes of cedar box and dusty dried earth. It’s a model of purity, hosting soft textures over a feminine framework of brisk acids and salty minerals, with tart red fruits contrasted by sour citrus. Violet-tinged florals form along with a hint of plum and licorice, as fine tannins slowly dry out the expression. Readers in search of traditionally-styled yet wonderfully refined and age-worthy Brunello owe it to themselves to seek out the 2016 Padelletti. (Drink starting 2026)"

Antinori Pian Delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 2016 - $65
93 Points Vinous Media
"The 2016 Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino from Antinori is dark and rich, displaying notes of brown spice, mocha and tobacco, before giving way to musky black cherries and sage. Its cooling, creamy textures usher in a dense wave of ripe red and hints of black fruit, with salty minerals and fine-grained tannins providing grip. Licorice and violets resonate, along with inner earth tones throughout the long and structured finish. The Pian delle Vigne will require many years of cellaring to show its best, but it is well worth the wait. (Drink between 2026-2036)"

Frescobalci Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino 2016 - $50
95 points James Suckling
"Black-cherry and blackberry aromas with minerals and fresh flowers, following through to a full body with firm, silky tannins that are polished and intense. Lovely finesse and length. Drink after 2023."

Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2016 - $70

96 points Vinous
"You can lose yourself in the bouquet of the 2016 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino. At one moment, the 2016 shows crushed cherries with autumnal spice; the next, it’s exotic florals and candied orange peels, and at another time flowery undergrowth, white smoke and wild berries. It’s unbelievably soft and pure, lifting the wine through saline-minerals, as sweet notes of cherry and raspberry begin to slowly saturate, yet what they leave behind is youthfully grippy tannins. With how structured the 2016 is today, it’s still enjoyable due to nervous acids and notes of sour citrus, which keep the expression fresh. The 2016 Poggio di Sotto Brunello is really a terrific effort and a classic in the making. (Drink between 2026-2038)."

Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 2016 - $25 for 375ml, $95 per Magnum (No 750s)
96 points Wine Spectator
"Ripe, sweet cherry and raspberry fruit are accented by floral, mineral and wild herbs in this alluring red. A backbone of dense, dusty tannins provides support, and the ripe fruit returns on the savory finish. Excellent length."
