Deanna Zachary of Girls, Inc. was the moderator of the April discussion about Legacy Giving. Sam Leask, Philanthropic Services Director, of CFSCC provided helpful information about the differences in NPO strategies for generating annual donations from donors' income to developing long-term, legacy giving/bequeathing of assets in wills/trusts.

During a short discussion about Donor Advised Funds (DAFs), Sam mentioned that “year-round, the Community Foundation offers local nonprofits a tool to share a profile of their organization’s impact with Foundation donors."

Kevin Heuer, Director of Engagement and Impact at CFSCC, said that a one-page summary of your nonprofit’s work, or Impact Profile, can be completed online in their grants portal and made available to donors as they consider grants from their donor-advised fund. If you submitted a Community Grant proposal in March, that will serve as your Impact Profile and no further action is needed. For more information, visit www.cfscc.org/IP.”

Grey Bears director, Tim Brattan, announces retirement

After 12 years at the helm of Grey Bears, executive director Tim Brattan has announced that he will be retiring from his position by the end of 2022.

In articles in the GoodTimes and the Pajaronian, you can see praise from the Board and community for Tim Brattan's inspirational leadership. He had the vision to grow the organization to meet the needs of our County, especially during COVID and the wildfires - and for seniors. His mantra: "grow our programs, make good decisions, get the money so we can 'just say yes'”.

"Under Brattan’s leadership the organization's diverse programs have grown to serve 4,500 seniors and thousands of business and residential customers throughout Santa Cruz County.

“It's been such a privilege to have helped expand Grey Bears impact," Brattan says. “Through the pandemic, CZU Complex Fire and steep rise in basic living costs, meeting the need for food, meals, household items, and opportunities to volunteer and socially connect are more important than ever – especially for those in our growing aging community.”

According to Pam Goodman, Chair of the Grey Bears Board of Directors, “Tim is smart, brave and has greatly grown Grey Bears programs over his 12 years as executive director. He is a visionary with tenacity and drive. The day-to-day operations are diverse and challenging. He manages to stay on top of it all. At the same time, he is planning for future projects to better serve seniors and Santa Cruz County residents.”

University of California, Santa Cruz Chancellor Cynthia K. Larive will assume the role of incoming board chair for the Monterey Bay Economic Partnership.

A collaborative leader known widely for her commitment to student success, inclusion, and equity,

Larive has promoted innovation and regional prosperity through the advancement of cutting-edge research and wider educational access. Read more.

Our Nonprofit Members believe in the power of collaboration and resource sharing to strengthen everyone’s ability to meet the challenges of providing excellent programs and services to our community.
