AIRCOAT PROJECT COMES TO AN END !

(Re)Watch the Virtual Final Event

On Wednesday 16 March 2022, the AIRCOAT project held its Virtual Final Event during Oceanology International in London.

The results presented at the event are the culmination of 4 years of collaborative work by the AIRCOAT partners: Fraunhofer CML, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie-KIT, Biomimetics Innovation Center - University of Applied Science Bremen, PPG, Finnish Meteorological Institute, AquaBioTech Group, HSVA, Avery Dennison, Danaos, and REVOLVE

AIRCOAT Policy Brief

Stemming from the project’s work, the AIRCOAT team developed the policy brief, “Shipping decarbonisation shout for new technologies: developing passive air lubrication”, to contextualise the broader relevance of the AIRCOAT technology and highlight the need for further research.

About AIRCOAT

AIRCOAT stands for AIR-induced friction reducing ship COATing.
AIRCOAT is a Horizon 2020 EU funded project promoting a passive air lubrication technology with the potential to revolutionise the ship-coating sector.

AIRCOAT air layer: positive environmental impacts

The AIRCOAT project is developing a bio-inspired solution that aims to reduce friction on ships, lowering fuel consumption and thus GHG emissions. This consists of a structured foil that retains air when submerged under water.

AIRCOAT technology would also avoid the release of biocide anti-fouling substances into the water.

About the project
The AIRCOAT project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement N° 764553.
