Leeds Autism AIM Monthly Update: May 2022

Hello and welcome to our latest monthly newsletter! In this update from Leeds Autism AIM, part of The Advonet Group, we have news on:

Online Groups timetable: May 2022
We're holding Peer Support Group sessions on the 3rd and 17th from 6pm-7pm. Our monthly Women-Aligned Group is on the 10th from 5:30pm-6:30pm. 
Our Gaming Group will be on our Discord community on the 24th from 6pm-7pm. We're also holding a Coproduction Group session on the 26th from 5:30pm-7pm. Finally, the next quarterly Autism Reference Group is on Tuesday 31st from 3:30pm to 5pm on Teams.

AIM's Health Access Project: Working across Leeds
After receiving funding to continue its’ work earlier this year, our Health Access Project is now able to support autistic adults across the Leeds City Council area!
This includes help to access GP support, communicating healthcare needs and getting one-to-one peer support.

Autistic Utopia: Manifesto
At the end of March, we held a discussion group on the idea of an autistic-friendly utopia. In it, we covered work, housing, public spaces, transport and education. As a follow-up, we have put together a manifesto, with the group participants’ ideas for improvements in each area listed on separate pages.

Leeds Autism Health Passport launched
The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT)’s Learning Disability and Autism team have launched a new health passport for autistic adults in the Leeds area.
Working with Leeds Autism AIM, Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service, Leeds Mind and the Leeds Autism Diagnostic Service (LADS) team, the passport has sections covering communication, healthcare needs and mental health.
It is free to download and is recognised by NHS services across the city. To get a free copy, please click on the link below.

Leeds Autism Show: Meet us at free  event this June
Leeds Autism Services (LAS) are bringing back the Leeds Autism Show for 2022! The free information event, formerly known as Bigger and Better in Leeds, will feature stalls, speakers and more at KPMG's office in Leeds City Centre. We will have a stall there, along with other local services who work with autistic adults.
The event is on Wednesday 22nd June from 9:30am to 3:30pm. More information, including a booking link, is at the link below.

Job Vacancy: Universal Advocate
The Advonet Group are recruiting a Universal Advocate to work with Leeds Autism AIM and their Community Advocacy service. The role is full-time and will have set hours to provide advocacy to autistic adults in Leeds. Here are the key details:
  • Salary: £22,021 pro rata per annum
  • Hours of work: 37.5 hrs per week
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Closing date: Thursday 5th May 2022 – 12 Noon
  • Interview date: Tuesday 10th May 2022 (provisional)

Leeds Waterfront Festival returns this summer
In July, the Leeds Waterfront Festival, an accessible event for neurodivergent people and people with learning disabilities will be held. There will be information stalls, accessible activities and a social meet-up, among other things.
The festival, led by Leeds Autism Services, is free to attend and takes place on Friday 29th July from 11am-4pm at Leeds Dock.

Learn about new fund offering advocacy grants for community groups
The Leeds Advocacy Network, led by The Advonet Group, are holding a free event about a new fund. This fund offers grants to community groups in Leeds from £500 to £10,000 to develop advocacy for communities who find it hard to access it.
It takes place on Tuesday 24th May from 9:30am to 1pm at the St George's Conference Centre, and is free to attend. if you would like to come, please book your ticket by clicking on the link below.

Autism Reference Group to meet in May
The Autism Reference Group, a forum for having your say on what local services should do for autistic adults in Leeds, is meeting at the end of this month. The meeting will be on Microsoft Teams on Tuesday 31st May from 3:30pm to 5pm.
It feeds into the Leeds Adult Autism Partnership Board and elects up to three people to represent the group. If you want to attend, please email us at leedsautismaim@advonet.org.uk and we will send you an invite.

News in brief
JubiLeeds Variety show coming soon
People in Action, Yorkshire Dance and Leep1 are running a variety performance, featuring autistic adults and adults with learning disabilities next month.
JubiLeeds is taking place on Friday 24th June at Leeds Conservatoire. Auditions closed at the end of April, but more details about how to watch the performance will be out soon. Click on the link below to get more information.

Turn to Us: Advocacy for parents
The Advonet Group's Self-Advocacy and CHANGE teams have launched a new project for parents who are working with social workers. Turn to Us will help them to refer for advocacy, receive self-advocacy training and give and receive peer advocacy.

Ageing and autism: A big conversation
The National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi) have launched a project about ageing and autism. It asks older autistic adults to share their experience of ageing, their worries and hopes around building a conversation on this topic.
To help with that, they have created a series of conversation starters. These can be downloaded from the NDTi website at the link below.
