Lock 29 (Rebel Hill Brewing)

Noting their Tuesday night “Buck a Shuck” oyster offerings and their solid reputation for craft beers, DW Sherri and I took a trip down Egypt Road to the new Rebel Hill Brewing outpost, Lock 29, on Route 29 in Mont Clare located just east of the bridge to Phoenixville.

The original Rebel Hill Brewing opened in 2016 on Schuylkill Avenue in Phoenixville and operates with minimal food offerings. In 2021, the owners decided to open a second location in Mont Clare, serving brews made at the original spot, but adding a full brewpub menu with coownership with the purveyor of Well Fed restaurant in Skippack. The combination of brews and food that we sampled earned a spot on our rotation list.

QUICK BITES
Riverside dining in Downingtown at La Sponda

Downingtown’s historic paper mill location has seen some significant turnover in recent years... Once the home of Firecreek, Barra Rossa, and most recently Milito’s. Now after a full recovery and renovation stemming from Hurricane Ida, La Sponda takes center stage along the Brandywine River. Check out the write-up in Main Line Today for more details. (Take a look at that view! This one's definitely on our list...)

New Deshi Village Halal Restaurant

New Deshi Village located at 2864 Ridge Pike, Norristown, is now open and offering dine-in, takeout, delivery, as well as catering! For those of you not familiar with the fare, and/or looking to try something new, Halal food is considered all food that is permissible to eat according to the teachings of Islam. This is essentially any food that does not fall into the category of Haram (or forbidden). In Islam, all foods and beverages are Halal except for those that were explicitly forbidden in the Quran. Next time you are in the Norristown/Eagleville area give them a try!

Gypsy Saloon "Jalapeño Pineapple Margarita"

We spotted this little gem of a cocktail while scrolling through our Instagram feed, and just had to highlight it here! The Gypsy Saloon in Conshohocken is a GREAT neighborhood restaurant and bar with an eclectic fare, a lively happy hour, a patio, and live music.

Although we've not made it over to Gypsy Saloon to try it out just yet, the sweet and spicy mixture definitely peaked our interest (and we plan to concoct them at home this weekend for ourselves)!

Ingredients
1.) Jalapeño pepper slices
2.) Tequila blanco or reposado
3.) Pineapple juice
4.) Cointreau (orange liqueur)
5.) Fresh lime juice

Rim your favorite margarita glass with salt, add and shake the ingredients together with ice in a cocktail shaker, then strain it into a glass over fresh ice. Lastly, garnish with sliced jalapeño and lime as desired! Give it a shot at home, and let us know what you think by sending us an email to amoveablefeastmontco@gmail.com!

The space is adjacent to the Schuylkill River Trail and is outfitted to provide an ambiance of a boat “Lock House”. Large screen TVs decorate the walls to enhance the enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere. Service is offered on two floors with windows overlooking the adjacent canal, as well as first floor and second floor patio dining. In September 2021 there was a significant setback when Hurricane Ida resulted in flooding and a temporary closure of the space until they could reopen in October.

We were provided with a list of a dozen Rebel Hill drafts that they were offering, including brew styles of Stout, Hazy IPA, Pale Ale, Kolsch, IPA, Fruited Sour, and Wheat. A selection of house cocktails includes Orange, Grapefruit, or Lemon Crushes using fresh squeezed juice, a Moscow Mule, Paloma, Sangria, or a Watermelon Margarita. (Drinks change seasonally) We opted for Rebel Hill brewed Scratch the Surface (5.4% ABV Pale Ale) and So Casual (5% ABV Kolsch) to enjoy with dinner.

Appetizer choices include Ahi Tuna Lettuce Wraps, Hummus, Deviled Eggs, Fried Brussels, Fried Pickles, and Fajita Chicken Quesadillas plus five varieties of Chicken Wings. The six salads on the menu include Caesar, Cobb, Mediterranean Quinoa, Southwest, and Waldorf. A selection of burgers and several other sandwich options include the Mont Clare Cuban, Fried Green Tomato BLT, Fried Catfish, Fried Chicken, and a Grilled Chicken Sandwich. (Gluten-free rolls are also available for the sandwiches.)

The oysters offered were both new to me... Peachtree or Blackberry oysters from Virginia’s Little Wicomico River. I chose a half-dozen Peachtree oysters as a starter.  Properly shucked and served with cocktail sauce, lemon and mignonette, these bivalves were a bargain at a buck each. DW Sherri and I shared an order of Dry Rub Cajun wings, although other flavor varieties of Bleed Green IPA, Buffalo Mango Habanero, Alabama White BBQ, and Truffle Garlic Parmesan were also available. The wings were plump, well-cooked, crispy, and seasoned with a flavorful rub that was not spicy despite the connotations of its name.

For our entrée selections, I chose a Cuban Sandwich and DW Sherri chose a Fried Green Tomato BLT. The Cuban was packed with Roasted Pork, Ham, Swiss Cheese, Pickles, and a swipe of whole grain mustard (served with Kettle Chips, fries $2 upcharge). I judged it to be much better than several of the other Cubans I’ve had in the area. The Fried Green Tomato BLT was served with breaded slices of green tomato, thick bacon, and arugula on sourdough bread with french-fries. While the portion size was not huge, it had a great taste and we both agreed we’d return for a re-order. Based on the quality of the food, beverage, and attentive service we experienced, we will surely make another visit when the warmer weather returns (if not sooner).

No reservations, weekend live entertainment.  Menu changes seasonally.
