Covering Systemic Racism

A journalism workshop for students, reporters and editors

Learn tips from the pros about how to uncover systemic bias in mainstream institutions. This virtual program will be conducted by veteran investigative reporters and editors, who will offer insights, tips and experiences to help you better do the difficult work.

Veteran investigative journalists will conduct the workshop, including:

  • Alden K. Loury, senior editor, WBEZ’s Race, Class and Communities desk.
  • Jeff Kelly Lowenstein, director, Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism.
  • Kari Lydersen, co-director, Social Justice News Nexus, Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
  • Asraa Mustufa, digital editor, International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. 
  • Moderator: Josh McGhee, reporter, Injustice Watch.

The workshop is sponsored by the Chicago chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists and the newly created Investigative Project on Race and Equity, which was created by Chicago Reporter alumni and supporters from around the nation who organized as Friends of The Chicago Reporter in September 2020.

The Investigative Project supports data-driven reporting, trains young journalists and collaborates with media organizations to shine a light on these issues, which are critical to the future of Chicago and the nation.
