Dear Friend,
Nearly two decades ago, Dorchester Bay and our partners at Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation and Southwest Boston Community Development Corporation formed the Fairmount Indigo CDC Collaborative to advocate for transit equity and healthy, safe communities along the Fairmount MBTA Commuter Rail line.
Over the years, we’ve fought alongside residents to ensure that all of the station stops along the Fairmount line were constructed and placed into operation as envisioned. We’ve worked with our partners at the Newmarket Business Association to make training and local employment opportunities available to rail corridor residents. We’ve partnered to make small business assistance and capital available to local entrepreneurs.
In short, we’ve sought to achieve together what none of us could do entirely on our own. That’s the basis of a successful partnership, and our efforts have borne fruit.
Over the past year, supported by a generous grant from the Kresge Foundation, we’ve turned our attention to the climate crisis that is impacting all of us on the planet, but that is particularly harmful to residents in the areas served by the Fairmount line. The impacts of climate change on our communities are not mere abstractions. They include poorer air quality (and consequently higher rates of respiratory illness), and more frequent and severe weather events resulting in flooding and damage to infrastructure, among other impacts.
Our work ranges from policy advocacy at the State House and City Hall, to community engagement. And our work is ramping up. In this newsletter, you’ll see a recap of a recent rally that our climate justice organizers Kendra Beaver and Felicia Richard helped to organize, which is just the most recent expression of our work.
If you’re interested in supporting our efforts to advocate for climate justice and equitable health outcomes along the Fairmount Line, in particular, click here to learn more about our work and the ways in which you can get involved.
Taking an active role in this important work can help build healthier futures for all residents of our community.
With best regards,
Perry B. Newman
