Mixed Tag Rugby Event – 21st May 2022

All past pupils & friends of Crescent are invited to PLAY & SUPPORT our first mixed, 7-a-side Tag Rugby event which will kick off at 11am on Saturday, 21st May at the school in Dooradoyle.  This fun event is a great way to catch up, reconnect and socialise with old classmates and friends.

We have received many great endorsements for the event from Crescent Past Pupils.

As David Wallace (past pupil, Ireland and British and Irish Lion) commented “as the years pass we don’t get too many opportunities to meet up so this is a great one.”
Gina Niland (past pupil, former Irish professional Tennis player) said that “it promises to be a really fun day and particularly because of Covid we haven’t had opportunities to meet up.”
Greg O’Shea (past pupil, Olympian and Irish Sevens player) talks about his “unbelievable memories of Crescent and what a way to spend a day with friends; with sport, food and fun.”
As a former member of staff, Anna Caplice (Irish Women’s rugby team) on recounting her time in Crescent says that “it is a really special community to be a part of and I know its going to be a special event.”
Mike Prendergast (past pupil, Munster player and current Attack and Backs Coach with Racing 92)  sees the event as ”a great occasion to meet up with people whom you haven’t seen in a long time.”

The Tag Rugby will be followed by a BBQ, Bar and Music. To enter or to enquire, email tag@crescentpast.com
We look forward to seeing everybody.

Death of Don Reddan, PPU Past President

Don Reddan was a student at The Sacred Heart College in the Crescent Limerick from 1948 to 1957. Few other past pupils can have had so extensive a relationship with their old school.

On leaving school he went to work for the Royal Insurance Company. In 1969 he established his own brokerage, Don Reddan Insurances, now run by one of his five sons, Diarmuid.

He became a committee member of Old Crescent in 1958, one year out of school, played for the senior team for many years and was capped for the both Munster and Connacht. He was captain of Old Crescent in 1965-67, President 1996-97 and was a trustee of the club until shortly before his death. He was also for many years a coach at the club.

He and his good friend, Dudley Herbert, coached Crescent College Comprehensive SJ with distinction in the glory days between 1983 and 1994 when the school won the Munster Schools Senior Cup five times.

He was President of Crescent College Past Pupils Union from 2013 to 2015 and an essential driver of its reignition after a number of years being dormant.

Don was a man of great candor but also warmth. He always had the best interests of others at heart. He was a fantastic member of our committee, and many others, given his honesty and endless network of contacts, bringing both to bear often at our meetings.

He applied his skills to the business of fundraising. Among his many contributions to the development of young people was the Geraldine Reddan Foundation, which assisted past pupils of Laurel Hill Coláiste in the furtherance of their learning of the French language. He was also responsible, almost entirely under the radar, for contributing to, and raising funds for, a number of Limerick charities and individuals in need. He was chairman of one of these, the Bergerie Trust, from 2014 to 2021.

Don’s legacy will live on and can be seen in many facets of school life at Crescent College Comprehensive, be it through the development of structures around sport or most recently when he spearheaded the establishment of the Past Pupils Union Scholarship Fund for students of the school.

We will miss him terribly.

Ní bheidh a lethéid ann arís. I measc na naoimh go gcastar é.

Sporting Crescent celebrates in 2022

This year has seen Crescent bring home a number of trophies in a record breaking season.

As mentioned in the last newsletter the Senior Girls Hockey Team took the Munster title this year and although they didn't take the Kate Russell national title the excellent record of the hockey team continues at Crescent.

A few short days after the Senior girls won their Munster title a second trophy was on its way to the Crescent Trophy Cabinet by the school taking the Munster Schools Senior Boys rugby title with a comprehensive 26-5 win over PBC in mid-March.

On other fields of play the girls’ Junior golf team won the Munster title and Crescent athletes won three gold and one silver medal at the Munster Schools Sports.

News from Crescent Alumni

We fairly recently received a lovely bulletin from a past pupil on the far side of the world - Peter Walpole (Crescent class of 1973)  who is living and working in the Philippines - https://apupalamguwancenter.essc.org.ph
-------------------------------
Dear all,

Wishing you well and hoping the school year is going well, we too at Apu Palamguwan Cultural Education Center try to manage the times. I doubt it I will meet you in activities but trust you go well.

This is where I now live with all sorts of groups of youths and activities by the forest.

This is the view I have from the front window

This is the women's group working on bamboo

I have a scraggy dog who comes to eat bananas

I pray for peace in these times of military encounters here in the uplands, not the peace the world gives, but the quiet powerless peace, as I look out on the world, that accompanies me in my daily struggle and that allows me take deep joy in the land and life of the people and in what God freely gives.

Peace to all,
Pedro
