Character Matters

Jude 1:7 (NIV®)
Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

One of the significant characteristics of the season prior to the return of the Lord will be the rapid deterioration of human character. Jude reminds us of the example of Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns. Their people indulged in sexual immorality and suffered horribly for it when “the Lord rained down burning sulfur” and destroyed not only the towns but every living thing, even the vegetation (Genesis 19:24-25). Note that immorality wasn’t forced on them; they engaged in it willingly. Indulgence has always been a dangerous attitude to entertain. Now is not the time to imagine ways you can indulge yourself, or wonder “how far is too far?” Corruption of human character is not a new thing, but it never leads to the best outcomes. As we approach the end of the age, it will happen on a broader scale than at any time in history. The old phrase “character matters” has always been true, but it has never been more true than it is today.

THINK ABOUT IT
It is one thing to be tempted. It is another thing to indulge in our temptations. As the deterioration of character sweeps across our land, it is time to turn to the Lord more intentionally. Are you earnestly seeking to conform to His character?

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me overcome evil with good—good words, deeds, and character. Holy Spirit, help me guard my heart against temptation and keep it softened amid a hardening and corrupt world that my character might reflect Yours. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Blessings,
