Mental Health Awareness and More

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It is a time when we can raise awareness for all those living with mental health issues. Communities In Schools of Mid-America recognizes the importance of speaking on these issues to reduce the stigma many individuals encounter. Our students and families have experienced an incredible toll over the past few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

TYLER GERHARDT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
Congratulations to this year's Tyler Gerhardt Memorial Scholarship recipient, Michael Miller! Michael plans to attend Independence Community College to get his certificate in IT, specializing in cyber security. After which, he will transfer to Wichita State University to further his degree in computer science while also getting a dual degree in journalism and government.

Sarah goes above and beyond to help the students she serves. As Lead SSC, Sarah leads by example and is exceptional when explaining or supporting her teammates, whether it pertains to integrated student supports or data. Congratulations, Sarah!
NOAH AND NATALIE'S STORY
Halfway through the school year, Noah* and Natalie* were placed with a family member due to instability in their home. While the family member was happy to take in the siblings, she was worried about providing for them since she was out of work at the time.

IN SCHOOLS AND BEYOND
  • The Student Support Coordinator at Troy Middle School in Troy, MO, and the school's counselor attended a student's track meet when they heard that none of his family could attend.
  • The CIS Resource Closet at Lakewood Middle School in Salina, KS receives a monthly clothing donation thanks to a partnership with the Salvation Army.
  • Students at North Lawn Elementary School in Neodesha, KS received pizza and donuts as a prize for meeting their goals as part of the Save Your Grades program.
  • To ease the transition from middle school to high school, the Student Support Coordinators in Chanute, KS teamed up so that 8th-grade students could ask questions.
  • The Student Support Coordinator at Topeka West High School in Topeka, KS hosted FutureNow: Finance for over 100 students.
  • Seventeen students at DeLaSalle Charter High School in Kansas City, MO received free eye exams and glasses thanks to a generous in-kind donation from Hawks, Besler, and Rogers Eyecare.
  • At George Nettles Elementary School in Pittsburg, KS, students join small lunch groups to practice positive communication skills.  
  • Theresa Plata, Student Support Coordinator in Anadarko, OK, spoke to local magazine Vital Resources about the work that Communities In Schools of Mid-America is doing in the community. 
  • We received a $20,000 grant from Walmart to support our work in Fort Scott and Uniontown, KS.
