New or notable, classic or quaffable, Mike is pouring a glass of it.
Beer: RuinTen
Style: Triple IPA
ABV: 10.8%
Brewer: Stone Brewing Co.
Mike Sez: Stone Brewing of Escondido, California, was already well-known for their IPAs in 2012 when the brewery decided to make an even stronger version of its Ruination Double IPA for that beer’s 10thanniversary.
The plan? Combine the workhorse Centennial hop, known for its floral and piney character, with the then-new Citra hops, which were bringing citrusy aromas to new beers. And to beef up the dry-hopping – adding hops into the beer late in the brewing process – to increase the dank character.
Conclusion: I liken the comparison of Stone’s Ruination Double IPA and RuinTen Triple IPA to the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. That earlier album is ramshackle perfection from the first notes of “Brown Sugar” to the maudlin strumming at the end of “Moonlight Mile.” Exile ends the Stones’ majestical run of albums with a longer, danker helping of rock transcendence.
RuinTen fills your loving cup with extra booziness and flavor. You sip it a bit slower so you can savor it and not get too loose. I’m glad I could shine a light on this beer, as it’s one of my favorites. Hopefully you get to cue it up, too.
