The NLRB Remains a Hot Topic
As you will remember from last month, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is the federal agency responsible for enforcing the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), which guarantees the rights of most private sector employees to organize and engage in group efforts to improve wages and working conditions, even if those private sector employees are not part of a Union.
On April 7, National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo announced in a memo that she will ask the NLRB to make 'Captive Audience' meetings unlawful. A 'Captive Audience' meeting is defined as a mandatory meeting to discuss the negative aspects of joining a proposed union. While this may seem simple enough to follow, GC Abruzzo is very strong in her language and broad in scope of what a 'Captive Audience' meeting might look like and what the true definition of 'mandatory' is.
To prove that this memo has bite, Connecticut had already passed legislation banning this practice, before the NLRB even made their ruling.
