Trout River Environmental Committee would like to invite you to attend Riverbank Heritage Day, celebrating Canadian Rivers Day. The event will be held June 12th, from 12pm to 6pm, outside of Carr’s Oyster Bar in Stanley Bridge.

Riverbank Heritage Day is a celebration of the cultural and ecological significance of rivers on PEI, highlighting education, conservation and restoration, history, arts inspired by rivers and watercourses, recreation, and local food. The event will include environmental groups as exhibitors and presenters with a focus on education surrounding rivers. Crafters, performers, and story tellers will display how rivers have inspired them and impacted their lives. Guests will also have the opportunity to go out on the water via kayak tours of Stanley River.

Environmental, educational and artist groups will exhibit and present materials relating their work, the environment, how you can get involved and much more. Here are just some of the groups that will be at the event: The PEI Invasive Species Council will be providing information on their Clean Drain Dry program, in hopes of tackling aquatic invasive species and increasing awareness of the issue. PEI Wild Child will be bringing out the artistic side in all of us; throughout the event all will be invited to participate in the creation of a mural, commemorating the event, and allowing all to display how rivers and watercourses inspire them. The event will host story tellers, that will give a history of local rivers, recreation, boating, fishing, or even fun times with family and friends. The event will also include local watershed groups, who will provide information on plants and wildlife, as well of some of the amazing restoration work, they are doing to protect PEI rivers and watercourses.

Riverbank Heritage Day is free or by donation, with all proceeds going to event organization, and watershed groups on the Island. Trout River Environmental Committee would also like to thank Innovation PEI for funding this event, as well as Carr’s Oyster Bar for hosting.

We hope you will come out June 12th to enjoy the splendor of rivers and learn about all they have to offer. Please visit troutriverec.ca for upcoming details or see Facebook and Instagram for updates.

On Monday, our third student is starting work, making our team five strong. In June, we will be adding one or two more team members. We started the summer work by conducting headwater surveys on each of our watersheds, where we find the uppermost point where water can be found. We will do this every spring and fall, to see if climate change and/or water extraction affects our streams.

We have put out two dissolved oxygen monitors for the summer, and we have downloaded the data from our seven temperature loggers - which will stay in the streams until 2026. Maintenance work has started on the park trails, and we are awaiting our first delivery of trees. North Rustico Home Hardware has kindly donated hundreds of wooden stakes, which will be used to attach wire cages to protect the hardwood trees from mice and hares.

Shayla, our Project Manager, has begun our annual water quality monitoring surveys. We are monitoring 35 points for temperature, oxygen, pH, nitrates, flow rate, and other parameters. The data is placed on a public site called Atlantic Datastream and, if you google it, you will see that it contains historical water quality data for the whole Atlantic region.

We do hope to see you on the trails, at Riverbank Heritage Day on June 12th, at our Tree Drive, at River Days in August, or at one of our summer nature walks. And do drop in to the office on Taylor Road anytime for a chat or to ask a question - we are usually there at lunchtime and later in the afternoon.

Thanks for your support,

The TREC team.
