Corn is our teacher, helper, bringer of abundance and nutrient that sustains mind, spirit and body, around the world. Many years ago I was told that corn will teach you what community is. As we gather to plant the corn let us learn together and pray for our lives to be as abundant as the corn on a cob.
In traditions of this area and the America’s corn is considered sacred and often used as an offering to sacred sites. Our corn first is an offering to the Life Giving Waters of Carson Lake and Lightning Mountain called Leon Peak, both on the Grand Mesa. We eat the corn on special ceremonial occasions and it is used for many of the cyclical offerings throughout the year.
After planting, we will also grind corn, from last year’s harvest, into corn meal and flour by hand for you to take home. A gift to all of you who have been a part of this sacred act of planting and harvesting.
POTLUCK - 6 pm
We will make cornbread in the horno (outdoor baking oven). Bring a dish— you are welcome to cook it in the horno. Let’s enjoy our celebration of planting and growing corn.
In May days in Mesa can be hot or cold, please check the weather and plan accordingly.
We look forward to being together.
