Outdoor Pool Update
Work is progressing on the outdoor pool. The shallow end will become the deep and visa versa.
We wanted to ensure you stay warm during our Wednesday sessions and beyond, so would like to share some information on how to do that.
One of the main issues we see as instructors is paddlers wearing Rash Vests, Rashies or Rash Guards as a 'thermal' layer. Rashies were originally designed to wear under a wetsuit to protect the wearer from irritation associated with sand, salt and neoprene. Unfortunately they have minimal thermal properties when used on their own, and in fact can wick away what heat your body can generate.
Other more suitable and affordable options are available to keep the paddler warm. The first option is a simple thermal or base layer. These are designed to trap air around your body and allow your body to warm up that trapped air; keeping you warm. They are generally constructed from Cotton, Cotton blends or the more expensive Merino Wool. The second option is the Thermal Rash Vest. These tend not to have the same thermal properties as a base layer, but are far warmer than a standard rash vest, yet have a similar look to them
If you are in any doubt, an instructor or an experienced paddler will happily give you some support.
Kingston Kayak Club are running this years Derwent Marathon on 19th June. This is a great opportunity to get out on the water for a nice paddle, or a lung busting race!
If you want to get experience in a Sea Kayak or White Water Racer then now is the time.
The start and the control point will be at the Tidal Barrage, Barmby on the Marsh, Near Howden East Yorkshire DN14 7HX. There is a picnic site and free car parking available at the Barrage.

Marathon racing is conducted in divisions; the lower divisions can use any sort of kayak or canoe but higher divisions use specialised marathon boats, long, narrow and very unstable when stationary!
Canoe polo is played by teams of five and the basic aim is for them to pass the ball from player to player, by hand, and score in their opponents’ goal while at the same time defending their own goal.
Slalom competitions take place every weekend throughout the country. Division 4 is suitable for beginners of any age. Slalom helps with the development of speed, boat control and white water skills which can be used in all aspects of canoeing and kayaking.
