A Message From TACL

TACL and TAP-OC Joint Statement on Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church Shooting

"Taiwanese American Citizens League and Taiwanese American Professionals – Orange County are heartbroken to hear about the senseless shooting yesterday at the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church. It is always difficult to find the right words in a situation like this, but our thoughts go out to the loved ones of the victims and to everyone at the church, and we pray for the quick and full recovery of those who have been injured.

In the midst of this tragedy, we herald the bravery and quick thinking of Dr. Cheng, the pastor, and the congregants who subdued the shooter and prevented the deaths of even more people. It is perverse that this sort of bravery should even be necessary, but it is a testament to the selflessness and strength of the Taiwanese people.

As we continue to commemorate AAPI Heritage Month this May, we would like to remind everyone to stay safe and check in with your family and friends during this time. We know our community is strong and resilient and will press on in supporting one another through this challenging time."

Events Recap

TAP-SF Hikes: Mori Point in Pacifica

Thank you for coming out to our hike and brunch in beautiful Pacifica! We had a really fun time getting to know everyone, hiking along the trail by the beach and through the mountains, and grabbing yummy breakfast food together afterwards at Pacific Java Cafe.

TAPpy Hour with John Fong

Another TAPpy hour in the books! We visited South Side Spirit House and mixed and mingled with new and old friends. Keep an eye out for our next one if you loved this past event!

TAP-SF x BWYA hike: Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve

We had a great morning hike at Skyline Ridge Preserve near Portola Valley with the Bliss & Wisdom Young Adults group! It was fun getting to know members of the BWYA throughout the morning and at lunch afterwards.

2022 Taiwanese American Cultural Festival

We came back to Union Square for the Cultural Festival this year, and you all came out!! Thank you for making our first in-person celebration after the pandemic a success! We had a day packed with performances, showcases, activities, and cultural experiences. For those that volunteered on the day-of, thank you for spending the day with us and helping us share the culture of Taiwan!

Planning efforts for the 2023 TACF will begin again in a few months. Stay tuned for more details if you'd like to be a part of the planning committee!

Upcoming Events

Book Talk with Dr. Jenny Wang

When: Tuesday, May 17 from 6:30-7:30pm
Where: In person at Eastwind Books of Berkeley, or virtually

To honor and celebrate May as both Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month as well as Mental Health Awareness Month, TAP-SF would like to share a book talk* happening from 6:30-7:30pm on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 both virtually and in person at Eastwind Books of Berkeley. "Permission to Come Home" confronts and destabilizes the stigma Asian Americans face in caring for their mental health. Weaving her personal narrative as a Taiwanese American and insights as a clinician with evidenced-based tools, Dr. Jenny T. Wang offers readers permission to embrace their mental and emotional self-care while understanding and honoring the richness of their heritage and embodying a new, complete identity. In ten chapters, each one focusing on a central theme—from recognizing emotions, to establishing boundaries, managing anger, and introducing play into one’s life—Dr. Wang presents a road map for the journey to wholeness. Please join if you can!

*Please note this book talk is not an official TAP-SF event. All event inquiries should be directed to Eastwind Books of Berkeley.

Dinner with TAP-SF

We're launching a new dinner series with TAP-SF board members starting in June! Whether you are looking for an opportunity to just enjoy a good meal with a group of people, or wanting to learn more about TAP-SF and the events we have coming up, we hope you'll be able to join us! These events will be small group dinners.

Since spots are limited to 6 people and is on a first-come, first serve event, June's dinner is already sold out. However, we will do similar style dinners in the future so please follow our FB page to be the first to know when we organize something like this in the future!

Follow our FB page to stay in the loop!

Taiwanese Community Happenings

Join the TAP-SF Discord community!

We are launching a new way to get in touch with us - Discord! Discord is a chat app that functions similar to slack. Come join us and hang out with us and people you’ve met during events! We tested this out at the recent hikes and it has been very useful for folks to have real-time communication about the group whereabouts. We’re also looking for anyone who’s experienced with slack communities to help us craft a welcoming space for everyone.

Join us here!
