Your number twos are our number one

This week we’re shining a light on our wastewater infrastructure and services – water that’s been used by humans (sometimes referred to as sewage), and its related infrastructure (known as sewers, or sewerage).

We look after more than 21,000 wastewater connections and 5,400 access chambers to 350 kilometres of sewers throughout Kāpiti, handling 4,700 million litres of wastewater each year.

We monitor our network in real time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and if there are issues or a pumpstation isn’t working, we get immediate alerts.

Update your details now for dog registration!

It’s almost time to register your dog, so now’s a great time to let us know about any important changes before we post or email your registration and invoice for the 2022/23 year.

We’re encouraging all dog owners to be environmentally friendly and receive their registration invoices by email, so if you need to update any details, or want to receive your registration invoice electronically, do get in touch. You can email us, call on 0800 486 486, or stop into one of our service centres and talk to one of our friendly staff.

You can even update some contact information through our dog owners online portal (you can find the details you need on last year’s registration).

Māori Economic Development fund to boost business

Three up-and-coming local Māori businesses have been selected as recipients of this year's Māori Economic Development Fund.

The judging panel convener, Russell Spratt (Āti Awa ki Whakarongotai), says this year’s recipients have a focus on health, wellbeing and education, reflecting our community’s interest in different ways of staying well.

All recipients strongly aligned with the Māori Economic Development Strategy, and the fund’s criteria.

Council stepping up in the housing space

Last week Council received two reports on the housing need in our community, and adopted a strategy to help address our widespread housing stress.

The reports are the result of qualitative, quantitative, and iwi-led research, conducted as part of an in-depth housing needs assessment. This identified that housing stress in Kāpiti is extensive and beyond what is being statistically captured.

The Kāpiti Coast District Council Housing Strategy 2022 outlines Council’s current thinking about housing in the Kāpiti region. It includes a vision and principles, the roles Council can play, and actions for the short, medium and long term.

Concept for visitor discovery centre emerging

An interactive and engaging visitor discovery centre will occupy one of the two building pods at Te Uruhi in Maclean Park, Paraparaumu.

This visitor discovery centre will present stories about the conservation work on Kāpiti Island and in our marine reserve, helping locals learn about and deepen their connections to our district, and improving the experience for visitors to Maclean Park and Kāpiti Island.

Information about tourism activities across our district will encourage visitors to stay longer and contribute more to our local economy.
