Volunteering for Social Connection

We know from a range of studies that helping others has both community and personal benefits.

Volunteering brings people together; it builds communities and creates a better society for everyone.

Social connection makes us feel better as it helps prevent loneliness and isolation. Having good relationships with others increases general wellbeing and has a wider, positive impact on communities.

In this edition, we release our latest Neighbourly Blog and new research from Volunteering Australia in the lead up to National Volunteer Week (16-22 May); we provide some volunteering opportunities to explore; invite you to share your insights about Neighbour Day 2022, and more.

So grab a cuppa and join us on your virtual Verandah!

Volunteering: Bringing people together

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is ‘Better Together’ (16-22 May) which recognises that volunteering brings people together; it builds communities and creates a better society for everyone.  To mark this year’s celebrations, Mark Pearce, the CEO of Very Neighbourly Organisation Volunteering Australia, has written a guest Neighbourly Blog.

“Given the last couple of years we have all experienced, I think it’s more important than ever to celebrate the value that volunteering brings to our lives and communities.

Evidence continues to demonstrate the mental health and wellbeing benefits of volunteering including combating social isolation and loneliness. Volunteering Australia’s ‘Evidence Insights: Volunteering and mental health’, reviews research on the effects of volunteering on mental health. It draws upon local and international studies focusing on the effects of volunteering on the mental health of volunteers themselves.”

The research paper lists seven key insights relating to better mental health and quality of life, increasing psychological and social capital, and more. You can read the full blog here.

Wave Your Appreciation

You can Wave Your Appreciation to thank the millions of volunteers around Australia by adding a smiley face on your hand and uploading your photo to social media with #WaveForVolunteers and #NVW2022.

In the above picture, you can see some of the Relationships Australia National team showing their waves of appreciation – a few of whom are a bit (!) camera shy - and utilised several creative alternatives.

2-minute survey

Can you volunteer 2 minutes of your time?

Relationships Australia is seeking your feedback on our 2022 Neighbour Day campaign.

The survey takes less than 2 minutes to complete and will help us improve Neighbour Day in future years.

We are also very interested to hear from representatives of Councils, community organisations and workplaces who had some Neighbour Day involvement.

To thank you for your insights, those who complete the survey will go into the draw to win one of ten Neighbour Day prize packs.

Complete the survey here.

Where can I volunteer?

A range of studies shows us that helping others has both community and personal benefits.

Social connection makes us feel better as it helps prevent loneliness and isolation. Having good relationships with others increases general wellbeing and has a wider, positive impact on communities.

The groups listed on the Neighbour Day website provide a variety of opportunities to join in, connect with others - and if you’re up for it, to help out by volunteering.

Your local council and our friends at www.govolunteer.com.au  also have ideas to help you to get involved.

Very Neighbourly Organisations & Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to meet people and do good at the same time.

This month we welcome our newest Very Neighbourly Organisation Hamilton Community House. They provide a broad range of information and activities to support people in the Southern Grampians Shire. Neighbourhood houses are not-for-profit centres that provide social, educational and recreational activities for their communities in a welcoming supportive environment.

There are approximately 360 Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria with at least one Neighbourhood House in just about every town and suburb. Neighbourhood Houses are managed by volunteer committees and paid staff and offer many opportunities for volunteer participation in all aspects of the house activities and management. Activities are generally run at low, or no cost to participants.

Many of our Very Neighbourly Organisations benefit from the support of volunteers and should you like to help out as a volunteer, you can find them here

Sorry Day & National Reconciliation Week

National Sorry Day (26 May) is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how Australians can all play a part in the healing process for the people and nation. While this date carries great significance for the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it is commemorated by Australians right around the country.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW)  (27 May – 3 June) is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey-the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. The NRW 2022 theme is - Be brave. Make change.

You can find some actions to make change here.

You could also try making social connections with your local mob or reaching out and volunteering at local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community organisations. Check out these 5 steps towards volunteering and engaging with Aboriginal communities here.
