Christine McGregor (1952-2022)

It is with deep regret that the Society has to announce the death of Christine (Chris) McGregor, Director of the Alpine Garden Society from 2001-2019. Details of the funeral arrangements and donations page can be found here. Our new Alpine House is named in her memory.

AGS Garden at Pershore opens under National Garden Scheme

Over the last six months the AGS Garden has undergone a programme of improvements. A new irrigation system, including a rain-water collection tank has been installed. In the Alpine House the planting of the beds and tufa wall has now been completed. Elsewhere in the garden heavy pruning, crown lifting and removal of dead tree material is on-going.

The central bed in the garden has been thoroughly transformed and replanted with Mediterranean species which won’t require watering after they become established. All plant labels in the garden have been replaced and updated.

The AGS Garden opened for the first time under the National Gardens Scheme on Wednesday, May 4th. Staff and volunteers welcomed visitors with refreshments, plants, merchandise and books for sale.
The garden will be open again on Sat 14th May & Sun 15th May and also on Sat 11th June & Sun 12th June. Whether you want to help or just come for a visit, you can find more details here.

AGS Tours

Plans are in place to run tours again later in the year. AGS members booking a tour will be able to visit South Africa in September, the Peloponnese in October - November, Patagonia in November - December and Bolivia in March - April 2023. AGS Shows

Since February the AGS has had a successful spring season of Shows up and down the country. Show reports are now online and you can read here all about the amazing alpines that exhibitors brought along.

Upcoming shows and plant fairs include: Harlow Carr on May 21st and East Cheshire on June 4th.

AGS Conservation

The Alpine Garden Society supports a broad range of international alpine conservation projects. These are short-term, small scale projects that focus on alpine plant conservation, either in the wild or in cultivation.

To apply for a grant, simply fill out the Conservation Application Form on our website. The deadline for submitting applications is 30 June, 23:59 UK-time.

AGS at Tatton Flower Show

In March, the Northern AGS Group was awarded the RHS Farrer Trophy for the best exhibition of plants suitable for the rock garden or alpine house at an RHS show in 2021. This year, the East Cheshire Group is planning to take part again with an exhibit of Alpines in Troughs. In light of increasing costs, the AGS has decided not to be present at the Chelsea Flower Show but concentrate on regional shows and events.

Zoom Lectures - Recordings

Our 2021-2022 season of Zoom lectures has ended in April with John Dower’s talk on Miniature Gardens. Recordings of our Lectures are available to watch at leisure. Members can watch these for free so if you haven’t already, book your tickets here. Our next season of talks will start in September and will focus on alpines from various continents.
