Have you remembered Woodlawn in your estate planning?

May 2022

Welcome:
Welcome and THANK YOU for your interest in the Woodlawn Endowment and Planned Giving Program Newsletter. The primary purpose of the Permanent Endowment Program is to provide a means for members and constituents of The Church to make gifts and bequests to provide a permanent endowment that will become a source for long-term financial support and living memorials to their faith.

Featured Fund – College Scholarship
May is graduation time and for many students and families it’s a time of financial stress because of the upcoming cost of higher education.  The Woodlawn Endowment Committee has a dream of some day being able to help Woodlawn students by offering scholarships for this important and formative time in their lives.  Consider making a gift to this fund to honor that student in your life.  This is just one of the ways you can make an investment in the future of the Church now while you can see the good it is doing.

When is it Time to Plan?

The Kansas Methodist Foundation website has a wealth of information for estate planning and planned giving.  If you are wondering when is the time to plan or just how to get started, the Foundation has prepared a video featuring Randy Clinkscales, owner of Clinkscales Elder Law Practice.  This presentation will answer many questions you may have about the process.  Click on this link to watch.

Ways to Give
Giving is very personal and there is no limit to the ways to give.  In the last newsletter we gave the example of adopting the Church as one of your children when dividing your estate.  Many simply tithe their estate as they did their income throughout their lives.  Non-cash gifts of real estate, land, stocks and other securities make sense to some and can result in substantial tax savings.  With the recent changes in tax law, there are useful ways to use Donor Advised Funds when you’re younger and Qualified Charitable Distributions once Required Minimum Distributions come into play.  The Endowment Committee is always available to help with questions about any of these ways to give.

Woodlawn Endowment Program Updates
In December we received a $20,000 donation to the Building Fund.  In this case, the donors felt there was a need to provide funds for future building expansion, updates or maintenance. It was also their desire to remain anonymous and we were glad to honor that request.

In March we received an additional $605 from the memorial of Marvin Dunlap for the Legacy Fund.  Marvin was a very supportive member of the Endowment Committee and his family continues to honor his passion with this gift.

In April we received $245 from the memorial of John Wiebe for the College Scholarship Fund.  John was a long-time member of Woodlawn and this gift will live on in his name in perpetuity.

In April we also made the fifth annual distribution from the John and Mary Withers Endowment Fund.  This year the distribution was $74,613.63 and per Mary’s wishes it was given to Derby Community Family Services (DCFS) to be used to provide food, clothing, rent and utilities to families in need in the community.
