Last month, our Policy Manager Rokas Morkūnas introduced our recent Tourism Vision Paper to OECD and government stakeholders at the OECD Tourism Committee meeting. The report, titled “Supporting tourism recovery and looking ahead with global solutions” was prepared by the initiative of our recently created Tourism Contact Group.
The tourism industry is one of the largest sectors globally, accounting for 1 in 10 jobs and responsible for the creation of 1 in 4 of all new jobs worldwide between 2015-2019. It has the potential to accelerate economic recovery and encourage local and international growth and development.
Realizing this potential, in our recommendations, we call on the OECD and governments to pay particularly close attention to the following priority areas:
- Building resilience for tourism
- Stimulating regular dialogue between tourism and health actors
- Collecting continuous data on incentive schemes
- Leveraging digital opportunities
- Promoting business sustainability
- Building travel confidence
While the recovery of the tourism economy is picking up pace, governments need to support the sector in an integrated manner, reinforcing collaboration with business to identify ways for tourism to create jobs and contribute to long-term sustainable development commitments.
Our Tourism Contact Group will continuously engage with the OECD and in particular the OECD Tourism Committee on building policy action and recommendations to achieve the above-mentioned goals.
