118 North
Maybe it’s hard to believe, but we are still working our way through the restaurants on Wayne Avenue in Wayne. As I mentioned before, I discovered this dining scene on a detour home from my New Jersey workplace a couple years ago. Fortunately, it’s a convenient drive for us from home, but apologies to those that feel the drive to this neck of the woods is onerous. We have found a few spots that are worth the ride, and 118 North was our latest stop qualifying for a recommendation (coincidentally located at 118 North Wayne Avenue.)
Having noted 118 North’s existence during our previous visits to Wayne, a visit to the 118 North website revealed a variety of live music acts, some were free and others requiring tickets for a nominal fee. It was a double treat night for me, as a Soundgarden cover band was playing a ticketed event on a recent Friday night ($10 tickets, dining with a reservation and seat for the show). As you enter for your dining reservation, they check your ticket status and provide a handstamp. We were led to a table for four in the narrow bar/dining area that opens into an area with a dance floor and an intimate stage environment.

...the rest of Ron's column
118 North was opened in February 2018 by local entrepreneur/musician Ken Kearns in collaboration with the Ardmore Music Hall and the family owning JD McGillicuddy’s, taking over the space previously occupied by JDM on Wayne Avenue. Kearns, who heads up the annual Ardmore Music Festival, is a member of the regionally know Rugby Road Band and sought to highlight local talent at 118 North. The performance area was enhanced with an “State of the art” sound and lighting system. Kearns enlisted the help of the Ardmore’s Ripplewood chef Biff Gottehrer to develop enhanced food offerings.
A variety of mass market and craft beers are available, including Guinness, New Trail White Ale, Norristown’s Von C Stony Creek, Victory Prima Pils, Zero Gravity Conehead IPA, Stella Artois, Bud Light and Yuengling Lager. A full complement of liquor and wine choices are also available.
Food choices are a bit elevated compared to regular pub food. Salad choices of Filet Mignon Salad, Spring Salad, and Cajun Caesar Salad are supplemented by “Munchies” and “Snacks” choices including Bar Olives, Roasted Nuts, Bacon Gouda Fries, Truffled Popcorn, Fried Coconut Shrimp, Pancetta Wrapped Dates, Fried Edamame, Grilled Garlic Shrimp, Mahi Tacos, and Brisket Nachos.
Handheld options include a North Burger, Catfish Po Boy, BBQ Pork, Spicy Chicken, and Grilled Eggplant & Fontina with larger plate entrees of Mushroom Risotto, Pasta Caramelle, Blackened Salmon, Fried Chicken Jambalaya, Half Roasted Chicken, and three varieties of Bar Pizza. (Three Cheese, White, and Pepperoni)
We decided to enjoy some craft draft beers - Tröegs Sunshine Pils, Last Call Lager, Fat Head Sunshine, and New Trail White Ale along with Stella Artois, Yuengling Lager and Boardroom Vodka to mix it up a bit.
For food orders we started with a Coconut Shrimp, a White Pizza, and Bacon Gouda Fries to share at the table. All solid choices were worthy of reorder, and the Fries served with Bacon, Pickled Onions, doused with melted Gouda cheese and garnished with chopped Scallions, were so good we ordered a second plate of them to eat with our meals.
For the main meal, DW Sherri chose the Broccoli Cheddar Soup and the Grilled Garlic Shrimp. The soup was good, but the Grilled Shrimp came with a surprise not noticed in the menu description - Calabrian Chilis. I thought they had a nice spicy kick, but DW thought it was a bit too much spiciness for her. Another diner chose the cornmeal crusted Catfish Po Boy, served with smoked Tomato and Chipotle mayo, pleased with his choice that is not often seen around these parts. I chose the North Burger as did another dining companion. The burger was prepared with Pork Roll, American Cheese, Pickles, and Special Sauce (two thinner patties vs a thick burger). I thought the flavor umami was a close second in my informal burger ratings through my dining adventures (#1 ranking currently held by Butcher and Barkeep in Harleysville) and qualifies as a definite reorder.
After the entrees were done, we enjoyed additional drinks and listen to the band play Nineties alternative rock with an emphasis on selections from the Soundgarden catalog (one of my favorite bands). The band area has tables around the perimeter and the floor in front of the stage was full of standing fans. The sound was not overpoweringly loud, and the mix let all the individual channels come through with distinction. I encourage those interested to check out the 118 North entertainment schedules as there is quite a variety to please many music fans (Billy Joel, Classic Rock, Grateful Dead, Beatles, Blues, Jazz, Dueling Piano’s, 80’s Dance Party). On some nights entertainment is free and others require a nominal charge ($12 pp for our Soundgarden show w fees/tax). Show schedule and tickets are available on the website.
Menu prices are bit elevated, perhaps to be expected on the Main Line in a live entertainment venue. Happy Hour Wednesday through Sunday 4PM – 6:00PM. Reservations via Resy.
