Miami-Dade Age-Friendly Initiative Updates

May is Older Americans Month (OAM)! The Miami-Dade Age-Friendly Initiative is excited to celebrate OAM with our partners in the aging community. The theme for this year is Age Our Way, placing a focus on aging in place. Aging in place means ensuring older adults can remain in their homes and live independently in their communities for as long as possible. While Age My Way will look different for each person, here are common things everyone can consider:

  • Planning: Think about what you will need and want in the future, from home and community-based services to community activities that interest you.
  • Engagement: Remain involved and contribute to your community through work, volunteer, and/or civic participation opportunities.
  • Access: Make home improvements and modifications, use assistive technologies, and customize supports to help you better age in place.
  • Connection: Maintain social activities and relationships to combat social isolation and stay connected to your community.

As May also marks Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States, it is important to remember that older adults can suffer from a range of mental health issues. Older adults often suffer from depression, anxiety, and dementia in silence, so it is important to look for warning signs to protect our older adult family members and loved ones. AARP Announces Disaster Preparedness Resources

Are you ready for the next big storm? Older adults may face some challenges during an emergency. For example, mobility problems, chronic health conditions, or not having any family or friends nearby to support you. AARP Florida is sharing a variety of AARP resources available to Floridians as they prepare for Hurricane Season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, 2022. The CDC also has prepared an article to assist older adults in emergency preparedness. In April, researchers at The Tropical Meteorology Project team predicted an "above-normal" Atlantic hurricane season. The team forecasts 19 named storms, including nine hurricanes, four of which could be major hurricanes. AARP Florida has everything you need to get prepared and stay ready for any disaster.

United Way Miami Partners With SingleCare to Offer Up to 40% Savings on Prescriptions

Community support  including  delivery  of services,  social  services and  widespread information  and resources  for  emergency planning  is a vital component of healthy aging. United Way Miami has partnered with SingleCare (formerly FamilyWize) to help the community save millions of dollars on the cost of prescription medicines, since its inception in 2008. Nearly 700 local pharmacies accept the SingleCare Prescription Drug Discount Card, and consumers are making health conscious decisions by filling thousands of much-needed prescription medicines every month.

The card is free of charge – there are no age restrictions, income restrictions or limit on how many times a single card may be used. It can be used by people who do not have health insurance, or for medicines that are not covered by insurance plans.
