Deborah James
Executive Director

Congratulations to Greg Haines the new Director of Boarding at St Peter's Cambridge

Following the resignation of current Director of Boarding Jed Rowlands in Term 1, St Peter’s is delighted to advise that Greg Haines has been appointed to this position, effective from the start of Term 3.   Greg previously held the role of Deputy Principal at St Peter’s prior to his move to St Paul’s Collegiate as Director of Teaching and Learning.  He previously held leadership positions at Saint Kentigern College in Auckland including boarding Duty Master for 3 years, as well as 6 years of boarding experience in the United Kingdom.   Greg is well known for placing a strong emphasis on promoting a supportive environment for staff and students, and this is well aligned with the school’s family spirit.   St Peter’s looks forward to welcoming Greg back to St Peter’s to continue the great work that Jed Rowlands has led in this space.  Jed departs to take up the role of Chief Executive Officer at Te Awa Lifecare Village.

Congratulations to the newly appointed
St Cuthbert’s Senior Leadership Team Members

(Left to Right) Tom Curtis, Julia Fuge, Rob Griffiths and Julie Hogg.

Head of Faculty (HOF) for Languages, Rob Griffiths, has been appointed to a new role of Assistant Principal, reporting directly to Principal Justine Mahon. In his new role, Rob will assume responsibility for strategically developing the curriculum across the College and work in conjunction with the other senior staff on streamlining delivery of student systems. Rob has taught across both the public and independent sectors and is an inspirational and dedicated teacher, with a formidable reputation for excellence in all he does.

To support our growing Senior School of over 1200 students, St Cuthbert’s has created three new Deputy Head of Senior School roles, reporting to Deputy Principal and Head of Senior School, Suzanne Winthrop.

Julia Fuge has an outstanding track record of excellence in education both in New Zealand and internationally. She has taught in both state and independent sectors, and in co-ed and single sex schools, holding roles in previous institutions as Head of Faculties of Mathematics, Accounting and Computer Studies, and Deputy Principal. In addition to teaching her mathematics classes, she will now be responsible for Academic Enhancement and Tracking for the Senior School. Her strategic focus will be on ensuring that St Cuthbert’s maintains its leading academic results through academic tracking, and ensuring each child has the right support to achieve her potential. Julia brings a wealth of experience to her new role; St Cuthbert’s is very proud of Julia’s recent achievement in supporting four of our students to be selected to the prestigious 2022 NZ Maths Olympiad Squad, with St Cuthbert’s girls making up one third of the team, and the only girls’ school represented.

St Cuthbert’s is well known for its leading science programme, with our students continuing to achieve top results in the subject across both IB and NCEA, and in Scholarship examinations. Tom Curtis has served the College as our Head of Faculty for Science for the past six years, and previously has worked in leadership roles at the Methodist Ladies College in Melbourne. Tom has played a key role in the development of the science curriculum, and has led the implementation of the Junior School Science Programme from Years 5 - 6. He has had extensive experience in the operational organisation of the College for the past several years, and in addition to his responsibilities as HOF for Science, and as a Biology teacher, he will support the Senior School across all aspects of logistics, and will be leading a review of our academic reporting to parents.

Deputy Head of Senior School: Student Services, Julie Hogg

Julie Hogg is St Cuthbert’s current Director of Boarding and has done an outstanding job of developing our Boarding programme at St Cuthbert’s for many years, with recognition by the Independent Schools of New Zealand, in 2019, through an Honours Award for Services to the Boarding Sector. Julie is also an extremely talented teacher, with a breadth of experience in both primary and secondary sectors, having previously taught economics, social sciences, and physical education, and been a former Head of Geography and Careers.  Julie has proven leadership experience which is reflected in her many management roles in NZ sport such as manager of the Football Ferns for the FIFA World Cups.

The disruption and uncertainty caused by unexpected events can threaten to obscure what we most value in education – our purpose, our people, and our place.
In an uncontrolled environment, sometimes the present is all we have capacity to focus on.
The vision that we had for where we want to be and what we want to achieve grows dim as we focus on the immediacy of what is required.
Remembering our people, our purpose and our vision is a powerful tool.
The ISNZ Annual Conference in 2022 shall offer an opportunity for delegates to reflect, review and consider the future of education, our schools for tomorrow, and the essential elements of leadership and wellbeing in a time of uncertainty.

Learn from ISNZ's leadership members how they have achieved the positions they are in today. ISNZ asked some of our leaders to answer a few questions to help other members to get a few steps closer to their next leadership role.

Kate Pollard - Principal at Chilton Saint James School

What was the best advice you got along the way?

I’ve had a number of pieces of advice but there are two that have really stuck with me and which I still live by. The first is to ’always play a straight bat’ and the second is to always come back to the question ‘what is best for our students?’. Playing a straight bat refers to always acting with integrity, transparency and good faith, even when it would be easier not to face an issue square on. Always bringing any dilemma or issue back to what is best for our students puts my thinking back on track and offers clarity - reminding me of our paramount purpose.

Paula Wells - Principal at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School

With the benefit of hindsight, what advice would you give to your young self in developing leadership skills and competencies?

You cannot be all things to all people all of the time. Taking care of self is essential, and pivotal to that is giving oneself permission to prioritise time to do the things that make our own hearts sing. Set boundaries around your work/life balance and hold yourself personally accountable, or delegate that task if necessary. Yes, there are times when the role asks a lot of us, but we will be less than effective in the leadership of others and our communities if we don’t prioritise our own wellbeing.

Andrea Tong - Principal at AGE School

Give three critical components of a child’s education today to ensure their future wellbeing as responsible global citizens.
1. Help children to inherently know themselves and what they need to support their own wellbeing.
2. To enable space for reflection, curiosity, and creativity.
3. To view the world through a compassionate lens and use this along with knowledge to understand and solve problems.

Student to attend International Biology Olympiad in Armenia

St Peter’s Year 13 student Sarah Ellis has been selected as one of four students for the NZ International Biology Olympiad team to attend the 33rd International Biology Olympiad in Yerevan, Armenia from the 10th to the 18th of July.

Sarah showed amazing practical skills, exceptional persistence, curiosity and a sound understanding of Biology at the recent 10 day training and selection camp in Dunedin. This is the second year that Sarah has been chosen to represent New Zealand at this international competition. To gain her place in the NZ team, Sarah has put in hundreds of hours of study and has been selected from an initial talent pool of more than 330 students and from the camp group of 24 who represent the top 5% of NZ Biology tauira. This is a huge achievement.

At the IBO, Sarah will be competing against students from more than 65 countries while completing a range of practical tasks and answering theory questions, all at the level of first year university Biology. To that end, she will be continuing her preparation for IBO until the team departs in July.
