CCHS Newsletter 59 - 27th May 2022
Message from Executive Headteacher
We are now formally into exam season which is very strange after the two year absence.  I am particularly sympathetic to our Year 13 students who are sitting their first "proper" exams since their Key Stage 2 SATs!
I know that we have done all that we can to prepare our children for a challenging few months and I know that parents will be working hard to support their son or daughter in whatever way they can at home.

I wish all of our exam candidates the very best of luck!

Sad farewells
This half term we say goodbye to two members of staff who are moving on to new careers. Mrs Barker (Geography) has decided upon a change of career and is going to work for the environment agency in Yorkshire.

Mrs Croxall (Pastoral Manager) is also moving on to pastures new with a career change, starting work for a local housing association just after half term. Mrs Croxall has been at Codsall High School for sixteen years and has supported numerous students and their families during that time. Mrs Croxall would be able to write several best sellers with the stories she has heard over the years!

I wish both staff the very best of luck for their new careers and want to thank them for the difference they have made to the lives of so many students during their time here.

Federation Growth
This week Lane Green First School formally voted to become part of our Federation of schools from June 6th 2022. This means that we are now at five schools, all based within our local community, able to share expertise and knowledge in a way that will really enhance the educational journey of our young people. From September 2022 Codsall High Federation of Schools will cease to exist and a new name will be used, South Staffordshire Learning Partnership, signalling a genuine move to an educational partnership of equals. I will share more details with parents in the near future.

Reminder - Change to Toilet Access
Prior to the Easter break it became apparent from conversations with staff and students that due to a variety of factors we would need to limit access to the toilets during lesson time, e.g. some students were using the excuse of going to the toilet to waste lesson time. The senior leadership team discussed the different issues at length and made the decision to close the toilets during lesson time for the majority of students.

Students can obviously still use toilets pre school, at break and lunch
and after school.
Students with specific medical issues can have a toilet pass which enables them to use the toilet when required for both an extended period of time as well as for a short number of days.

Similarly, mindful of potential concerns some parents or students may have, students can, if absolutely necessary, visit student services to request a toilet key.  However, this will be the exception.  Student services is entirely staffed by female members of staff.

Our view is that a maximum gap of two hours is more than enough for our age range of students to be able to wait to use the toilet, notwithstanding the provision for any student to go to student services should an "emergency" arise.

As a father of a teenage girl myself I am more than aware of their needs and am confident that with the provisions we have made the changes will enable our students to focus on their learning during lesson time.
Covid Testing Flow Diagram
Should your child test positive for Covid,
please see updated guidance below.
You may have received this information from other sources, or may have seen it covered in the media recently but we felt it important to share with you in school.
The number of cases of Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) in children has recently increased.  Public health doctors and scientists are looking into what could be causing this.
The advice is that parents see a GP if their child has symptoms of Hepatitis, which includes yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice).
Good hygiene, including supervising hand washing in young children, can help to prevent infections that can cause Hepatitis.
For more information on Hepatitis, please see the NHS webpage below:-

Have your circumstances changed recently?

Parents claiming some benefits can claim free school meals for any of their children who are registered at a Staffordshire school and who would normally be at school at lunch time. School meals are a good way to ensure that your child eats well at lunchtime and you can save yourself time and money.

Even if you don't want your children to have the meals, claiming them helps their school. The more eligible parents who claim meals, the more funding the school receives.

The phone number for the free school entitlement checking service team has changed.  Should you need to contact them regarding any claims queries, their number is now 0300 111 8007  option 3, then option 2
