The Student Motivations project was conceptualised to provide vital insights into how Japanese-language students understand their learning journey, common trends in this journey, and the impact of Covid-19 on their motivation and engagement. As part of this larger initiative, the project team—Dr Rowena Ward, Dr Toshiyuki Nakamura, Professor Carol Hayes, and Dr Laura Emily Clark—held a seminar recently to share the initial findings of the Student Motivations project, supported by Sakura Network and Japan Foundation, Sydney. In her new book, Dreams of Flight, Associate Professor Fran Martin from the University of Melbourne explores how young Chinese women negotiate competing pressures on their identity while studying abroad. Later this month, in an event hosted by CHL and CHL's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Committee, Fran will talk about educational mobility and the making of gendered subjects. CHL's Dr Esther Sunkyung Klein is co-author of China Story Yearbook 2021: Contradiction, a detailed synopsis of China, which presents a stellar set of diverse stories about action and reaction, motion and resistance. Katerina Teaiwa: Project Banaba

The works and personal narratives of Banaban scholar and artist, CHL's Professor Katerina Teaiwa, are a travelling multimedia installation commemorating the history of Banaba, also known as Ocean Island in the Moana Pacific.
The exhibition explores the untold New Zealand phosphate mining history in Banaba Island; and the resilience of the Banaban community in the face of social
and political adversity.

Wemba Wamba Yumerraki: An immersive approach to research

Storytelling is at the heart of Indigenous knowledge systems, and the visualisation of the data analysis is posited through CHL's Jennifer Mason perspective as a Gourrmjanyuk woman of the Wemba Wamba Nation.
Her research aims to take audiences on an immersive journey, gathering oral histories and experiencing culture, as she pieces together Wemba Wamba songlines and yumerraki (dreaming stories).

At this recent event hosted by PAMBU, independent researcher Jan Hasselberg spoke about his project to locate historical photo collections of New Guinea (Papua New Guinea and West Papua, 1875–1940) in archives, libraries and museums around the world, and to compile a list of these collections for researchers, including people from New Guinea looking for links to their history.
